27 year old world record went down in the mile. What an incredible performance by Josh Kerr!

Roger Bannister's four-minute mile still stands as the most famous mile, though it would now finish nearly 17 seconds and more than 100 meters behind the world record.

Our favorite time of the year is just around the corner and our coaching staff is ready!

RunWild XC 2026 Mission Statement

At RunWild Running, our mission is to develop athletes through purposeful training, consistent effort, and a positive team culture. We believe success in cross country is built one day at a time through small, intentional actions that add up over the course of a season. Our goal is not only to help runners achieve their athletic potential, but also to build confidence, resilience, friendships, and a lifelong appreciation for the sport.

Our Three Pillars for Success
1. Consistency
Think of each day as a deposit into a piggy bank.
Every run, drill, hill workout, strength session, and recovery day adds a little more value to your account. Small deposits made consistently over time create something powerful. Missing days and then trying to make up for them all at once often creates more problems than progress.
In this analogy, the piggy bank is your body, and the change represents the miles, workouts, strength training, and recovery that go into becoming a stronger runner. Try forcing too much change into a piggy bank at one time, and it may crack. When that happens, your focus shifts from improving performance to repairing damage.
Our goal is to make steady deposits throughout the season so that when championship time arrives, we have a full bank to cash in.

2. Intentionally Structured
Running rewards hard work, but hard work alone is not enough. Success comes from working both hard and smart.
More is not always better.
If an athlete can run an 8-minute 2K while training three days per week, it would not make sense to double the training load simply to achieve the same result. Additional training creates additional stress, and unnecessary stress increases the risk of injury, burnout, and overtraining.
Throughout the season, you may notice coaches holding athletes back during workouts or adjusting training plans. This is never a punishment, nor is it an excuse to avoid difficult work. It is a strategic decision based on what the athlete needs most at that moment.
Everything we do has a purpose. From activation drills and dynamic warmups to cooldowns, stretching, strength work, and recovery, every piece of our program is intentionally designed to help athletes improve while staying healthy.

3. Desire
As coaches, we can provide training plans, guidance, encouragement, and opportunities. However, none of those things matter without desire.
Cross country is as much a mental sport as it is a physical one. Every athlete faces moments of doubt, nervousness, discomfort, and adversity. Learning how to manage those challenges is part of becoming a stronger runner.
In all my years of running and coaching, I have never seen an athlete benefit from being yelled at, talked down to, or made to feel that their effort was not enough. Our goal as coaches is to create an environment where athletes feel supported while learning how to push themselves beyond their perceived limits.
Legendary Oregon coach Bill Bowerman once said, "No one can coach desire." While we cannot give athletes desire, we can help them develop the confidence and mindset needed to overcome pre-race nerves, mid-race doubt, and the challenges that come with pursuing difficult goals.

Parents and Coaches: Different Roles, Same Team
As someone who coaches two of my own children, I understand how challenging it can be to balance the roles of parent and coach.
There is a time to coach and a time to parent. While I will do my best to support and guide our athletes during practices and races, I cannot replace the encouragement they receive at home.
As parents, one of the most valuable things you can do is focus on what your child did well and celebrate the positive moments. Running is one of the most demanding sports there is. There are no timeouts, substitutions, or opportunities to pause and regroup. Athletes must stay mentally and physically engaged from start to finish.
Your support matters more than you may realize.
We also ask that athletes arrive on time and prepared for practices and races whenever possible. We understand that families have many competing commitments, and we appreciate your efforts to help your child participate fully in the season.
Our Coaching Team
This season, I am excited to be joined by Dr. Qui Smith and Coach Hilary Floyd.
Both are passionate about helping athletes achieve their goals and grow as individuals. Together, our coaching staff is committed to creating a positive team culture built around our three pillars: Consistency, Intentional Structure, and Desire.
The season will challenge our athletes, but we hope it also provides lasting friendships, meaningful experiences, and memories that inspire a lifelong love of running.
Thank you for trusting us with your athletes. We are excited for the journey ahead and look forward to a great season together.
If you have any questions or need anything throughout the year, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you,
Coach Duncan
