September is recognized as a time to raise awareness about PMOS, or Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, formerly known as PCOS. PMOS is more than a reproductive or hormonal concern. It involves interconnected changes in hormone function, metabolism, menstrual cycles, and overall health.

Symptoms such as irregular or missed periods, changes in weight, fatigue, skin changes, unwanted hair growth, or difficulty with fertility can sometimes be overlooked or addressed individually without considering the larger picture.

Early identification of PMOS matters because it can affect more than the symptoms you are experiencing now. Persistent untreated PMOS may also be associated with increased risks involving long term metabolic and gynecologic health, including type 2 diabetes, cardiometabolic concerns, obstructive sleep apnea, and the need to protect the endometrium in women experiencing prolonged anovulation.
