A little reminder to help you navigate the week ahead.
No in-network provider available? Don’t assume you have to choose between going without care and paying the full out-of-network cost.
A network-gap exception may allow you to receive care from an out-of-network provider using your in-network benefits but there are important steps to take before treatment.
In this video, I'll explain what to ask your insurance company, what information to document, and why written approval and agreed-upon payment terms matter.
A verbal “you’re covered” may not be enough. Get the details and get them in writing.
Considering an out-of-network provider? Do your homework before receiving care.
Not every health plan includes out-of-network benefits, and even an approved network-gap exception may not prevent additional charges if the provider has not agreed to the insurer’s payment rate.
Before treatment:
• Verify your out-of-network benefits
• Confirm coverage and authorization requirements
• Ask whether a network-gap exception is available
• Determine whether a single-case agreement is needed
• Request all approvals and payment terms in writing
• Document every insurance call, including the date, representative’s name, and call-reference number
Next week, I’ll explain how to request a gap exception and what questions to ask your insurer and provider.

It might feel like an uncomfortable question to ask your doctor. It's not - it's one of the most important ones.
You have the right to understand the risks of declining or delaying treatment - not just the benefits of accepting it.

HMO plans usually require a referral from your primary care doctor before you can see a specialist.
PPO plans typically let you go straight to a specialist - no referral needed.
Not sure which one you have, or whether your plan even allows it?
That's exactly what we're here for.
As your patient advocate, we'll dig into your plan details, confirm what's required, and help you get to the right care faster - without the guesswork or the runaround.
You shouldn't have to decode your insurance plan alone. Let us do it with you.

Thanks to the No Surprise Act, providers and facilities are required to give you a Good Faith Estimate of expected costs before you receive care - if you're uninsured or paying out of pocket.
Don't be afraid to ask: "Can I get a Good Faith Estimate before we schedule this?"
It's your right.

Navigating healthcare shouldn’t leave you feeling confused or alone.
I’m excited to introduce a new Complete Dignity educational series focused on helping patients and families better understand the healthcare system. We’ll discuss communicating with providers, evaluating healthcare options, insurance policies, medical bills, claim denials, appeals, prior authorizations, financial assistance, and more.
My goal is to provide clear, practical information that helps you feel informed, prepared, and confident when advocating for yourself or someone you love.
What healthcare or insurance topic would you like me to discuss? Share it in the comments.

Your privacy rights don't change just because your appointment is virtual. HIPAA's protection apply to Telehealth visits just like they do-in-person - your provider still has to safeguard your health information and can't share it without your consent.
