The Midwest Thunderbirds are proud to announce Tammy Cowan as the new Head Coach of the Women’s Side!

Joining Tammy on the coaching staff are Rhiannon Filer and Lewis Gilday, who have been added as Assistant Coaches.

With an experienced coaching staff in place, the Thunderbirds are ready to continue building a strong women’s program and representing the Midwest at the highest level.

The season is officially hitting the business end. With Week 5 in the books, the picture at the top of the Midwest Rugby Union’s Men’s D1 and D2 divisions is starting to take shape — and every week brings bigger matchups, bigger statements, and bigger consequences.

🏆 MEN’S D1: The contenders are beginning to separate from the pack, but there’s still plenty of rugby left to play. With playoff positioning becoming increasingly important, every result carries more weight as we head toward October.

⚔️ MEN’S D2: The race is wide open, with several teams making serious moves and the standings continuing to tighten. With the postseason approaching, there’s no room for complacency.

Four weeks are in the books, and the picture is starting to get clearer. The Men’s D3 & D4 Power Rankings are beginning to mature as clubs separate themselves, make their moves, and battle for postseason positioning.

That’s roughly how long teams have to make their statement before the playoffs arrive.

Every match matters.
Every point matters.
Every opportunity to climb matters.

We plucked the below statement from the comments section of our post regarding Week 5 Admin Updates. We thought it would be better shared as a general statement on our page.

"We have heard questions and concerns regarding administrative processes, scoring requirements, and the fees associated with certain Union services. In particular, some members have asked how these measures contribute to growing the game. Those are fair questions, and they deserve a clear response.

First, it is important to recognize that rugby remains one of the most affordable sports available at the senior club and amateur levels. While it is possible to find local recreational or "pick-up" leagues with lower costs, those comparisons are rarely equivalent. Competitive rugby requires national governing body registration, supplemental health insurance, club liability coverage, eligibility management, competition administration, travel coordination, disciplinary oversight, scheduling, and championship operations. When compared to other organized adult sports operating under similar requirements, rugby remains remarkably inexpensive.

At the same time, members rightly expect certain standards from their Union. They expect a professional and up-to-date website, accurate standings, timely score reporting, on-time schedules, championship events, responsive administrative support, and clear competitive processes. None of these services happen automatically. They require both financial resources and significant volunteer time.

It is also important to remember that the Union is largely run by volunteers. These individuals are not compensated for the countless hours they dedicate to supporting clubs, administering competitions, managing disciplinary matters, maintaining schedules, updating websites, communicating with members, and ensuring the competition operates smoothly. Like everyone else, they have families, careers, and personal commitments outside of rugby.

Because volunteer time is limited and valuable, members are expected to follow established administrative procedures. Repeated requests to reopen matches that should have been scored properly, or appeals filed simply because someone disagrees with an outcome rather than because a genuine procedural issue exists, place unnecessary burdens on volunteers and divert time away from initiatives that benefit all members.

One aspect that is often overlooked is that many of these fees are service-based. In other words, members only incur these costs when additional administrative work becomes necessary. If clubs submit scores correctly, meet deadlines, follow established procedures, and avoid conduct that results in sanctions or disciplinary actions, they will never encounter many of these fees. The fees exist to offset the additional workload created when extra intervention is required rather than to generate revenue from compliant clubs.

As for the question of how these efforts help grow the game, the answer is straightforward: professionalism grows participation. Today's players, particularly younger generations entering our clubs, expect organizations to have a credible online presence, active social media engagement, accurate information, and well-run competitions. A professionally administered league creates confidence in the sport and improves the experience for both current and prospective players.

Accurate and timely score reporting allows standings to be updated quickly, supports meaningful social media content, and creates engagement throughout the season. A modern website, active digital communications, organized championships, and visible competition results all help showcase the sport to potential players, supporters, and sponsors.

In addition, funds collected by the Union are reinvested into initiatives that directly increase rugby's visibility. This includes activities such as livestreaming championship events and the Thunderbird Cup, improving digital content, and enhancing the overall presentation of our competitions. These efforts expand rugby's reach beyond those physically present at matches and help introduce new audiences to the game, benefiting every club across the Union.

At the end of the day, administrative processes and associated fees are not obstacles to growth. They are the tools that allow the Union to operate a modern, organized, and sustainable competition. The goal is not bureaucracy for its own sake. The goal is to provide members with a high-quality rugby experience while respecting the time of volunteers and investing in initiatives that strengthen and grow the game for everyone."
