🎗️ RARE CANCER DAY | SEPTEMBER 30

Some childhood cancers are so rare that many people have never heard of them.
Today, we shine a light on Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT) a very rare type of soft-tissue cancer that often develops in the abdomen or pelvis and primarily affects children and young people.

Because rare cancers affect relatively few children, they can be difficult to recognize, study and treat. Limited cases can also mean less information and fewer treatment options.

But "RARE DOES NOT MEAN UNIMPORTANT". Every child deserves timely diagnosis, appropriate care and the opportunity to fight for their future.

This Rare Cancer Day, let’s learn, share and speak up for children living with rare cancers. 💛

💰 HOW EXPENSIVE IS CHILDHOOD CANCER TREATMENT?

For a family in Nigeria, a childhood cancer diagnosis can bring not only fear and uncertainty, but a tremendous financial burden.

Treatment often involves investigations, chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, blood products, hospital admissions, medicines, transportation and accommodation.
And for many families, much of this cost has to be paid out of pocket.

Nigeria continues to have a high reliance on out-of-pocket health spending, exposing families to the risk of serious financial hardship when they need healthcare.

In countries with stronger health-financing and insurance systems, families can have greater financial protection from the cost of essential healthcare. But financial protection is still not guaranteed simply by having insurance, it still depends on what services and costs the coverage actually includes.

So what happens when a family cannot afford the next chemotherapy cycle, blood products, investigation or hospital bill?
This is where organizations like can make a difference.

Children’s bodies are still growing and developing, so cancer treatment must be carefully adapted to their age, size, development, and specific type of cancer.
