Tragically, as recent events highlighted in Venezuela, time = lives during the response to an earthquake or other disaster. We are proud to help support realistic training for Federal Emergency Mgmt Agency USAR Task Force teams. Their outstanding work saves countless lives around the world every time they are deployed and we could not be more grateful for their dedication and commitment to the mission!

One moment, you’re an invincible 230-pound Green Beret charging into combat in Afghanistan. A split second later, an IED explodes and nearly tears you in half.

But this post really isn’t about our colleague and friend, James, or about the horrific injuries he survived on 28 Oct 2012.

Initial injuries:

* Left BKA (below-knee amputation)
* Multiple pelvic fractures
* Near amputation/disarticulation of the right leg at the hip
* Bilateral inguinal artery bleeding
* Soft tissue injuries to both arms

Initial treatment:

* CAT tourniquet to the left leg
* 12 rolls of Combat Gauze packed into the pelvis, with ligation of several pelvic arteries
* 30 mg morphine IM
* 100 mg ketamine IO (FAST1)
* Two 800 mcg fentanyl lozenges (“lollipops”)

Or his 118 surgeries to date.

It’s about his incredible daughter, Cammy, who was just 11 years old when their world was shattered.

Like every little girl, Cammy grew up. But she grew up in the shadow of her 18D dad, staying by his side through countless surgeries, months of recovery and rehabilitation, and every challenge in between. Through that unique and difficult journey, her own path was quietly shaped toward a beautiful purpose: becoming a prosthetist so she could help others facing obstacles like those her father endured.

Today, Cammy is finishing her residency at Walter Reed Medical Center—the very place that helped piece her dad back together all those years ago. Her empathy, compassion, understanding, and expertise are making a profound difference in the lives of those she serves. Her dad—and all of us at NAR who consider them both part of our extended family—couldn’t be prouder.

Daddy’s little girl is all grown up. What a blessing she truly is to so many people when they need it most. 🦾🦿🫡

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has taken proactive steps to enhance the safety of both its residents and the deputies who serve our community by issuing tourniquets and providing training on their use.

Equipping deputies with emergency medical skills allows them to administer immediate, life-saving interventions before EMS can safely access the environment, ultimately preventing fatalities. These efforts further strengthen the agency’s preparedness to deliver critical, life-saving services when they are needed most. The agency is committed to providing the most updated equipment and training to best serve our county.

Following the success of the inaugural THOR-NAR ADaPT course, we have 2 additional courses scheduled for this year! The 3-day intensive program will focus on the physiology of hemorrhagic shock, hemorrhage control techniques, blood resuscitation, and the regulatory framework required to successfully build and sustain a whole blood program. The course also covers blood resuscitation considerations in special populations, including pediatrics, geriatrics, OB/GYN, and complex medical cases.

This course is ideal for representatives from major blood banks, regional blood program leadership, paramedics launching new blood initiatives, and tactical law enforcement medics.
