It's beautiful when a family can come together to honor their parents’ wish to remain at home.
But this story also highlights how difficult aging at home can be. Six adult children were able to share the caregiving responsibilities and even with that support, the family eventually needed 24-hour paid care.
Family caregivers carry an enormous load with love. But it is still a heavy load.
My grandparents wanted to age at home. Eventually, their care cost $4,000 a week. My grandparents stayed home into their 90s. It took six adult children, extensive unpaid care, and $300,000 in savings to make it possible.

October 1 is now less than 10 days away, and there is still significant concern about whether hospice agencies will be able to meet the new reporting requirements.
Regardless of the concerns surrounding implementation, agencies should be preparing to meet the deadlines and documenting everything required.
If an agency is audited, having the documentation to support what was done, and when it was done, will be critical.
