Philippe Starck was one of the first designers to take the Navy chair out of its original context and place it into modern design-focused settings. When Gregg Buchbinder had just taken over Emeco in 1999, he ran into Starck in a hallway at the ICFF trade show in NYC. Gregg said, “Mr. Starck, thank you for using our chairs at the Paramount Hotel.” After thinking a moment, Starck asked, “The Navy Chair? Do you own the company? I thought it was owned by a bunch of old army guys! I’d like to design a chair for Emeco.”
Philippe Starck shifted the trajectory of Emeco, and we are forever grateful for the friendship.

Not a new logo. Our signature.
If you happen to pass by Hanover, Pennsylvania, you’ll see the original hand-cut aluminum Emeco sign on our factory building, standing proud since 1944. You might have come across the same wordmark on vintage Emeco chairs. Chairs built with raw handcraft, sweat and human care. The thing is, that’s exactly how we still make our furniture today – by hand, following the same unique 77-step craft process. That original sign says more than our name. It’s our signature.
So, it’s official, our hand-drawn 1944 logo is back. Look closely. The lines aren’t perfectly smooth. The proportions may look a bit odd. That’s the whole point. Those uneven, unique details are not mistakes, they are the signature of true craftsmanship. They are our absolute promise that what you sit on was shaped by human hands. Proven to stand the test of time. Welcome back to the original us.

The name Kito, chosen by Naoto Fukasawa, means ”Life with Wood” in Japanese. Given to a chair defined by its material, it’s a name that speaks to Fukasawa’s design philosophy of simplicity and material honesty.
