We don’t think twice about spending $8 on a latte. Sincerely — from an unsuccessfully recovering sugar ju**ie — I GET IT. That little sugar rush is a lovely thing. But lately, we’ve been talking an awful lot about the price of beef.

And I started wondering… what if we put those two things side by side?

We’ll happily spend $8 on a specialty coffee with very little nutritional value, but then quibble over $7.55/lb for American beef — (our currentprice) — or even the $10–$14/lb national average.

At $7.55/lb, that pound of beef makes roughly four burger patties.

Four meals. Four opportunities to nourish your body. Four opportunities to feed your family.

And yet somehow, beef is too expensive.

I hear, “Beef should be cheaper.”
But why?

Why should the food that requires farmers to show up every single day be cheaper?

Farming carries a mental load that not everyone is cut out to carry. Weather doesn’t care if you’re tired. Markets don’t care if you’re having a bad week. And livestock certainly doesn’t care what’s on your calendar.

This job is literally life and death.
We work hard — every day — to raise food for our neighbors and our own families.

And maybe the question shouldn’t be:
“Why is beef so expensive?”

Maybe we should also ask:

“Why are we so willing to pay so much for some things, but expect the people producing our food to charge less?”

Because here’s the thing:

You can spend $8 on a latte. Or you can spend $7.55 on a pound of beef that becomes dinner for your family.

One gives you a moment of indulgence. The other gives you something to build a meal around.

Neither choice is inherently wrong. It’s about where you choose to invest your hard-earned money.
Maybe beef isn’t as fun as a fancy coffee.
Maybe it’s practical.
Maybe it’s nourishing.
Maybe it’s worth paying a fair price for.

And honestly?
You can make a whole lot more things with a pound of beef than you can with a latte.

Support your local farmers. Know where your food comes from. And when you buy American beef, remember that you’re not just buying meat — you’re investing in the people who work every day to put it on your table.

It was an honor and a privilege to be a small part of the VNA employee picnic today. These nurses, social workers, staff and volunteers are doing Gods work caring for their fellow humans in all stages of life. Fleur, Juliet and Wendy were happy to visit with everyone. We are thankful to be there for those people who care for so many! ❤️

Ugh, it’s cocklebur season. While the highlands love itching on it, it gets trapped in their hair and is awful to get out, if they even will allow it.
