South Korean defense giant Hanwha Group has acquired Hanwha Philly Shipyard (formerly Philly Shipyard) in Philadelphia, marking one of the largest foreign investments in the U.S. shipbuilding industry. The move is expected to bring South Korea's globally recognized commercial shipbuilding expertise to the United States, where naval production has struggled with labor shortages, rising costs, and construction delays.

As the U.S. Navy seeks to expand and modernize its fleet to keep pace with China's rapidly growing naval capabilities, Hanwha plans to invest in advanced manufacturing, automation, and workforce development to increase shipbuilding capacity. While the Philadelphia yard does not currently build frontline Navy destroyers or aircraft carriers, the acquisition is viewed as an important step toward strengthening America's broader maritime industrial base and supporting future naval programs.

With South Korea operating one of the world's most efficient shipbuilding industries, defense analysts see the partnership as a strategic effort to improve U.S. ship production speed while reinforcing cooperation between two key Indo-Pacific allies.
