Bay Area Brain Bee
The Annual Bay Area Brain Bee hosted by Dr. Murray at Cal State University, East Bay. The Bee is ope
In 2012 Cal State University East Bay hosted the 1st Bay Area Brain Bee (Bay-Bee) under the guidance of Dr. James Murray and with the support from the Institute for STEM Education. Now an annual event held every January at CSUEB, the Brain Bee is akin to a spelling bee with questions related to the nervous system. The competition motivates students to learn more about the brain and foster an interest in a career in neuroscience. A world-wide event, ALL students from grades 9 through 12 are invited to compete, with our local winners invited to compete at the national level in Washington DC, culminating in an International Brain Bee! Faculty at CSUEB who are involved in research related to the brain serve as judges, giving high school students access to the university campus and faculty.

Our 3 top winners of our 14th annual brain bee, our 3 esteemed judges, and myself. Rosa Lee won overall, and is off to nationals in a couple weeks. Aidan Kam came in second, and Rayna Kumar came in third. We started with 105 contestants, so getting to top 3 is amazing (having to answer more than 25 questions correctly!). Thanks to Drs. Fencsik, Artori, and Tsang for their service as judges in round 2. And thanks to a bevy of volunteers keeping score etc. (Ashley, Aeryn, May, Salina, Patricia, Vanessa, Carina, Maribel, Dana, Benjamin, Melanie, Soraiya, Brisa, Ian, Eunju (EJ)

We had 163 register for the 2025 Brain Bee. We then had 95 RSVP in March they were coming, and 54 said they would stay for lunch. We had 64 of the 95 RSVP show up Brain Bee, and of those 27 made it to Round after scoring 10/15 or better on the written quiz.
Congratulations to our winners today, Olivia Kim (1st; Henry M. Gunn High School), Arya Devanath (2nd; California High school), Larry Zhao (3rd; Basis Independent Silicon Valley), and to all the other participants who showed amazing knowledge of neuroscience. Our first place winner got 26/28 verbal questions correct., and that was after she qualified for the second round by getting more than 10/15 correct in the first round. All 3 received neuroscience books as awards, and Olivia has qualified to attend the 2025 USA Brain Bee Championship will be held on May 3-4 at Rutgers University.
