This Sunday, as part of Hope’s Milestone MInistry program, our 3rd graders received their Growing in Faith Bibles. The kids and parents first attended a “get-to-know your Bible” class together during the Sunday school hour with the Director of Children’s Ministry. Then, during 10:45am worship, Pastor Jason prayed for each family and the 3rd graders were handed their Bibles to take home. These Growing in Faith Bibles will be used by these young Hope members in Sunday School through Confirmation class.

A desire for fairness is built into creation, but the reality is that (on account of our sin) life is often unfair. While it is good for us to bring complaints before God and look to the day when all things will be made right, as forgiven sinners, we find comfort in the generous, extravagant unfairness of our God in Christ.

Hope kicked off a new year of Christian education at Rally Day today! Members of all ages enjoyed games, a balloon launch, cookies, Sunday school & Bible study time, a backpack blessing during worship, plus an ice cream social! May God richly bless our learning this school year.

This week we take time to remember. As we pass the 25th Anniversary of 9/11, we remember the event and the heroic response of many. As we celebrate Rally Day, we remember the mercies of our God. Our Gospel lesson this week highlights the importance of what we remember. As the forgiven people of Christ, first and foremost, we remember and live by the mercy God has shown to us through Jesus.

Our world loves to debate greatness in every area of life - politics, sports, business, and more. Following his God-given confession of Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God, Peter seems to be living the dream. Yet when Jesus clarifies what it means for Him to the be the Christ, Peter bristles as Jesus' vision. Their conversation helps us recognize our bent towards visions of glory, even while Jesus invites us to true life that is found only denying ourselves, taking up our crosses and following Him.

Our Gospel reading is centered around these questions: (1) who do people say that Jesus is? (2) Who do you (Jesus’ disciples) say that He is? A strange mix of answers have been offered to the first question through the centuries, but the God-given answer shared by Peter to the second question is our confession: Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. And as Jesus continues, He really answers a third question for us – What is the result of confessing who Jesus truly is?

In reading the story of Jesus and the Canaanite woman from Matthew 15, we are invited to take our place alongside her. She is undeserving of help, so as she approaches Jesus in humility, she doesn’t demand blessings. She says that she will gladly accept even the crumbs that fall off of the master’s table. After all, even a crumb of Christ’s mercy is good enough to give us all that we need.

We often think of this story when Peter joined Jesus on water as an example of great faith. While that is not exactly the case, the story does remind us of the One we can trust, even when we have little faith.
