We had a great time at the Annual Conference, sharing work our team has been thinking through in the field, in design, and alongside the communities these projects serve!
Stephanie Caulk and Trevor Igel presented When Water Outpaces Warning, exploring how rapidly rising water can threaten essential infrastructure, and how floodplain management, capital planning, and emergency coordination can help communities prepare.
Trevor also helped share construction lessons from the Jackass Gulch Channel Restoration Project, including what it takes to turn a drainage channel into a more resilient community amenity.
Bryan Grotz examined the hidden waterways beneath Indiana State Road 135, where karst features called for careful evaluation during culvert replacement design.
Julia Giddens presented lessons learned from modeling hydraulic surf features, sharing what the team learned about the methods and key parameters used to model in-river surf waves.
And Emily Villines brought people together as a panel moderator.
We’re grateful for the conversations working to make our waterways and communities more resilient. If we missed you at the conference, we’d love to connect!

The first technical step toward a park isn’t detailed design. It’s figuring out what’s actually possible. Our latest blog explores feasibility studies, early project decisions, and the path from a promising river to a built and commissioned park.

Resilience is about more than keeping one system running. Brian Stephens-Hotopp and David Zelenok shared that message at the 2026 Annual Conference, exploring the connections between critical infrastructure and the importance of redundancy, situational awareness, and emergency planning. Connect with Brian or David to learn more.

Calibre’s Whitewater Division Manager, Scott Shipley, helped kick off the 2026 -NC Conference as this year’s keynote speaker. Scott’s passion for building great programs and projects shines through in his focus on user-based design and continuous improvement. Those ideas continue to shape how we approach whitewater projects: starting with people, building strong teams, and designing for lasting community impact. 🌊

Great parks rarely begin with drawings or funding. They begin with someone who sees what a could become.
In our latest blog, we break down how local champions can build momentum, gather community support, and start turning an idea into a river park.
