🌍 What happens when systems thinking meets empathy-driven curriculum design?
At Frankfurt International School, two educators redesigned their Grade 8 ELA experience through the Empathy to Impact framework from Inspire Citizens, while integrating Compass Education systems thinking tools into student inquiry.
Using tools like the Root Cause Tree alongside Compass frameworks, students explored real-world issues ranging from air pollution to unemployment, developing deeper critical thinking, stronger empathy, and more meaningful pathways for action.
The collaboration helped students:
1. Investigate interconnected global issues
2. Explore systems and root causes
3. Strengthen authentic communication skills

🎭 How can systems thinking connect theatre and sustainability?
In this lesson plan, Erick Mukiira, Drama and Theatre Teacher at Aga Khan Academy Mombasa in Kenya, uses the Sustainability Compass, Systems Iceberg, Causal Loop Diagrams, and Behavior Over Time Graphs to explore the connections between sustainability and theatre.
Students conducted fieldwork, developing research questions and gathering information from teachers, department heads, and school leaders. They then connected their findings to the Sustainability Compass and Causal Loop Diagrams, using theatre to explore sustainability issues, interconnectedness, inequality, and social and environmental challenges.
The experience shows how systems thinking can connect research, sustainability, critical thinking, and creative expression across subjects.

Compass Education was proud to participate in and co-lead a session where we practiced systems thinking with an engaged group of educators, students, organizations, universities, and philanthropies.
Together, we used the Systems Iceberg to unpack the patterns, systems, and mental models behind some of the statistics we were seeing throughout the week. We then engaged in collective thinking about what the world could look like if we used different mental models.
It was inspiring to see everyone in action and to share how systems thinking—and the teaching and learning that helps us see and understand systems—can be a leverage point for collaborating to build a more just and sustainable world.
It was also great to hear about the high-impact innovations our partners are supporting to create different outcomes.

“While the Sustainability Compass provides an excellent overview of a topic, the Systems Iceberg allows students to deep dive into an issue to really dig into the root causes, and then find leverage points that are accessible to them. Hence, hopefully eradicating the band-aid service projects and developing more long-term and sustainable projects with community partners.”
In this new blog post, Michelle O’Dea shares how she used Compass tools with her Year 12 students to explore poverty through a systems thinking lens. | ESF Sha Tin College
Starting with the Sustainability Compass, students explored the interconnected environmental, economic, societal, and wellbeing dimensions of poverty. They then used the Systems Iceberg to dig deeper into root causes and identify leverage points they could act on.
Michelle reflects on how this process can help students move beyond short-term service projects and develop more meaningful, long-term projects with community partners.
