Why is learning this skill important?
Entering the pool calmly, safely, and independently is an essential skill to become a proficient swimmer.
Everyone, especially children, should feel safe when they are entering a pool and should know how to exit the same way. When children are forced into the pool or are encouraged to jump before they acquire the skills to swim, it doesn’t allow them to respond (swim) calmly.
This “game” is called a sitting dive, and we’ve worked on it since he was under a year old.
This independent skill requires time, patience, and consistency, but is 100% worth the effort. 💜

This memory popped up from 8 years ago!! 💜💜
Adults who overcome their aquaphobia is a life changing accomplishment. HUET training or a similar course is often the main incentive for many adults to commit to swim lessons, who I have worked with, especially here in Houston.
Fortunately, for most, the benefits of learning to swim as an adult are seemingly endless. They span far beyond the initial goal of simply completing a course.
In the short term, it provides a sense of accomplishment for obtaining a certification to satisfy offshore job requirements, as well as the potential for career advancement.
Long term impacts of learning to swim include, improving self confidence and spacial awareness, coordination, strength, and endurance. Learning to swim is also useful as a general safety/life skill during emergencies such as flooding or performing a water rescue. Becoming comfortable in the water typically will reduce anxiety in and around the water as well as provide a more enjoyable/relaxing experience during vacation and water related activities. Swimming is a sport that can be performed individually or with group. Connecting through a new activity is a good way to build new relationships or enjoy leisure time with friends and family. It is also a great option for all ages and skill levels as it is a low impact cardiovascular exercise.
Why is learning this skill important?
Many new swimmers are pushed to the bottom of the pool to “dive” for toys, but not how to recover from the dive.
This method allows new swimmers to have more control of their breath and body position by teaching them how to calmly return to the surface.
Independence builds self sufficiency and confidence while learning bouyancy and depth perception.
Wearing a cap and goggles is helpful to keep goggles secure and snug to see clearly under water. At this age, toddlers start to become show more signs of independent. This routine at the start of each swim lesson becomes familiar and empowers them by being involved in their learning process.

Diving for toys is one of the many rewards for children learning to swim. Having time to play encourages children to explore, strengthen spatial awareness and depth perception while learning. 💜
Building trust and self confidence during swim lessons! 💜
This day we accomplished 2 major milestones 🧜♀️
1️⃣ She was willing and excited to push off the steps, which requires trust in the person she’s gliding to. Previously, we spent time getting comfortable on the steps with no pressure to submerge.
2️⃣ She independently submerged to reach for the toys at the bottom of the step. Floating toys allow children to get comfortable reaching and throwing while on the surface. Diving toys like rings allow children to develop depth perception, breath control and core strength while having fun.
This process doesn’t happen immediately. Building trust takes time and consistency. The foundation to becoming an efficient and secure swimmer is self confidence, strength and stability.
