Could you recognize a STEMI when the patient does not describe classic crushing chest pain?
A STEMI, or ST-elevation myocardial infarction, is a time-sensitive cardiac emergency commonly associated with an acutely blocked coronary artery.
Symptoms may include chest pressure, sweating, shortness of breath, nausea, jaw or back discomfort, and unexplained fatigue.
This 60-second medical explainer covers:
-What ST elevation means
-Why the first ECG may be nondiagnostic
-Why serial ECGs can matter
-How rapid reperfusion and PCI restore coronary blood flow
-How ACLS training supports systematic assessment and team response
Current American Heart Association systems target rapid ECG evaluation, including a 12-lead ECG within 10 minutes for suspected acute coronary syndrome.
Clinical decisions must follow professional scope of practice, current guidelines, and local protocols.
