On September 6, 2026, the Bright Light Projects Sierra Leone team was at Mano Community, Bombali District, engaging directly with community stakeholders and members whose journey with BLP has evolved from the BLP Mothers’ Club → VSLA → VSLA Smart Agriculture Initiative. This transformation reflects what long-term community engagement can achieve when people are supported to build their own pathways toward economic resilience.

Since 2016, BLP has engaged communities across five chiefdoms in Bombali District, with direct community contact and regular engagement at the heart of our approach. We believe sustainable development is not something delivered to communities, it is built with them. This is the BLP Community Resilience Pathway: transforming vulnerability into agency, ownership, and sustainable livelihoods.

From Savings to Investment: A Milestone for the Women of Rosint Community.

On September 11, BLPSL joined 30 women in the Rosint Community, Bombali District, for the opening of their third annual VSLA savings box.

What began in 2023 as a community savings group has grown into something much greater, a platform for financial inclusion, women's economic empowerment, and community resilience. Their growing savings reflect three years of discipline, sacrifice, and collective determination. The next step is to connect the group with formal banking services and financial literacy training so the women can keep building and protecting their financial future.

And the journey doesn't end with savings. Through BLP's VSLA Smart Agriculture Initiative, we are exploring how the financial strength these women have built can support productive investments such as cassava farming and other agricultural opportunities, creating income that can grow beyond the savings box.

This is the BLP Community Resilience Pathway in action: from saving → investing → producing → sustainable livelihoods. 🌱

Digital Futures Sierra Leone — Week 3

Week 3 of the Digital Futures Sierra Leone Free Computer Training is underway in Makeni, and participants continue building practical ICT skills.

UNICEF reports that only about 21% of Sierra Leoneans use the internet, while rural and marginalized learners face even greater barriers related to devices, connectivity, and digital literacy. Sierra Leone's National Digital Learning Strategy recognizes these same challenges and calls for stronger connectivity, access to computers and digital capabilities.

Digital Futures Sierra Leone is helping turn access to technology into the ability to actually use it. The strong demand we continue to see reinforces why BLP believes this program must grow, reaching more young people, schools, and underserved communities with the skills needed to participate in Sierra Leone's digital future.

Monitoring the Journey Beyond the Classroom

On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, BLP Buea team began monitoring beneficiaries at their internship placement sites, including Shalom Printing Press and Fashion House. The visit followed the progress of Leoniela and Faith in Fashion and Design, and Assamba Deloris in ICT. Their supervisors described the beneficiaries as hardworking and quick learners who accept corrections and demonstrate a strong understanding of practical work.

At BLP, monitoring is an essential part of our methodology. Through our Girls Shall Rise (GSR) and Young Men Entrepreneurship (YME) programs in partnership with WEFC Buea, we go beyond providing skills training.

We follow beneficiaries into real workplace environments to assess their progress, engage supervisors, identify challenges, and ensure training translates into practical skills and pathways to sustainable livelihoods.

Monitoring the Journey from Skills to the Workplace.

On Sunday, 30 August 2026, the BLP Buea team continued monitoring beneficiaries from our Girls Shall Rise (GSR) and Young Men Entrepreneurship (YME) programs, implemented in partnership with the Women Empowerment and Family Centre (WEFC), Buea.

At Mountain Hotel, the team visited Agbor Junior, who is developing his culinary skills as a Chef intern. Junior is committed, hardworking, and eager to learn, expressing satisfaction with the experience and making steady progress in strengthening his practical skills.

At BLP, monitoring is central to our methodology. We follow beneficiaries beyond the classroom into internships and workplaces, engaging with them and their supervisors to track progress, address challenges, and ensure that training translates into real-world skills and sustainable opportunities.

Follow-up visits for the other beneficiaries placed at Mountain Hotel will continue next week.

Digital Futures Sierra Leone: Growing Demand, Greater Opportunity

Now in its second week, the current cohort of the Digital Futures Sierra Leone Free Computer Training Program, which began on August 24, continues to provide practical, hands-on digital skills training to participants at the BLP Sierra Leone office in Makeni.

The enthusiasm and commitment we are seeing from learners reinforce a simple reality: access to practical ICT skills is no longer a luxury, it is increasingly essential for education, employment, entrepreneurship, and participation in today's digital economy.

The overwhelming community response to this program also highlights an urgent need to scale Digital Futures Sierra Leone. From our initial rural-school pilot to the growing demand we see today, more young people, students, teachers, and communities are asking for access to digital training than our current capacity can accommodate. 131 applicants for this cohort, we could only accommodate a few.

BLP is therefore looking toward stronger partnerships, additional equipment, training resources, and sustainable solutions that will allow us to take this opportunity to many more communities across Sierra Leone.

Training Doesn't End in the Classroom, Neither Does BLP's Support.

On Friday, 28 August 2026, BLP Buea team continued supervisory and monitoring visits to Girls Shall Rise beneficiaries completing three-month internships with businesses across Buea to assess beneficiaries' progress, workplace learning, and professional development.

At Fedy Graphics, Manager Mr. Ferdinand commended BLP intern Amadou Rashidatou for her commitment, curiosity, and eagerness to learn, noting that her placement is exposing her to increasingly practical and contemporary areas of ICT.

At Bright Light Projects, monitoring is at the heart of our methodology. We believe placing a young person in training or an internship is only the beginning; consistent follow-up helps us understand what is working, identify challenges early, engage employers and training partners, and ensure that opportunities translate into meaningful outcomes.

This hands-on approach, from training to internship, mentorship, employment, and entrepreneurship, is central to how BLP works to help young people move toward sustainable livelihoods and economic independence.
