A creative space developed by the community for the community.

The Interchange is a developing space for dance, theater, art, music, flow, and circus art performance and offers a unique opportunity for Houston’s art community to develop a space from the ground up. The Interchange is a 5,000 square foot warehouse in Midtown that is being developed into a performance and studio space meeting the needs of independent artists and small dance and theater companies. It features performance space both indoors and out, creating potential for unconventional artists to produce site specific work and use mediums that are difficult to produce within the typical theater setting.

Dear Interchange Flow community,

Thank you for your ongoing and intense interest in making the Interchange a safer space for everyone. We appreciate the high participation at our community meeting last Thursday. And we acknowledge the widespread discontent that was evident there. A lot of valuable information was shared which we did not know before, so thank you for bringing it to light. This is helping us streamline our decision-making process regarding these type of complaints in the future. The Interchange wants to respond in a fast and transparent way to allegations of harassment or improper behavior. We are deeply sorry to those who felt unheard or ignored during the information-gathering phase. We understand that this apology does not instantly rebuild trust. And we resolve to do better about listening, documenting and processing community complaints.

As a result of the meeting, we have decided to ask the people involved in these recent allegations to stay away from the Interchange. The unfortunate delay in taking this action was due to a number of factors. We were trying to be patient, to find a solution from a place of empathy and compassion. We were hoping that inclusion in the loving community would be a powerful catalyst for deeper personal transformation. These noble intentions clouded our ability to balance protecting the community with the call to ostracize. The Interchange resolves to be more proactive about handling similar concerns in the future.

So for those who are angry about the way we handled this, we are grateful for your passion, and we appreciate you caring about what happens at the Interchange. Your involvement and advocacy indicates to us that you value the Interchange and want it to be a reasonably safe space where we can share and develop artistic expression. We are committed to this process as well, and we resolve to do our best to make sure concerns are heard and addressed. There is nothing we can do to change the past. But from this moment moving forward, we resolve to do better at handling complaints with speed and transparency.

We hope you are willing to remain engaged and continue this conversation, while holding onto our core values of peace, love, unity and respect toward ourselves and one another. Due to the sensitive nature of this matter, we are turning off comments for this post. We look forward to carrying on these conversations through face-to-face conversations and direct messages.

Sincerely, Maggie and Andy

Here we go again with this PSA......please y'all, remember that the Interchange DOES NOT accept donations of ANYTHING without the permission of Andy or Maggie. Currently we seem to have people leaving art in the space and moving the art on the walls to do so. This needs to stop. Of course we love art, and we will do our best to display donated art when you talk to the management. But just finding art hung on our wall without prior conversation or approval is not ok. And it is really not ok when the existing art on the walls has been moved to accommodate this unasked for art. So please, whoever is doing this needs to stop. It is disrespectful to the space and the things that already exist in it.
