Not all metals are equally prone to corrosion.

A metal’s physical and chemical properties, along with the environment it is exposed to, can influence how quickly corrosion occurs. Even the energy required to produce a metal from its ore can help explain its tendency to corrode.

That is why understanding the material itself is an important part of selecting the right metal for long-term performance.

âš“ Then & Now: From Apprentice to Shipbuilding Leader

For Dontrae Marquise Walls, a career in coatings began with an apprenticeship and grew into decades of hands-on experience, teaching, mentorship, and leadership.

Fresh out of high school in 2004, Dontrae joined Newport News Shipbuilding as a painter and insulator apprentice. His early assignments took him aboard aircraft carriers and submarines, where he learned everything from insulation and surface preparation to abrasive blasting and spray painting.

Those experiences eventually opened the door to something he never expected: teaching others. A temporary assignment in the training department turned into a decade of impact, as Dontrae helped train the next generation of painters and insulators. His career later took him into construction supervision, independent instruction, and ultimately back to the department where he started, this time as a training manager.

As Dontrae puts it, “Painting was just the beginning.”

As part of our ongoing celebration, discover how one apprenticeship became the foundation for a career in shipbuilding, coatings, leadership, and lifelong learning.
