What can machine learning tell us about cement displacement?

Our latest research, authored by Hu Dai, Ph.D. and Zhibin Sun, takes a closer look at how machine learning can help predict the displacement efficiency of non-Newtonian fluids in vertical and inclined pipes.

Now published online and coming in the December 2026 issue, the study uses experimental data and an XGBoost model to examine the influence of pumping velocity, pipe rotation, fluid density, viscosity, and other parameters.

It’s another look at how data-driven approaches can complement engineering expertise and support better decisions in challenging cementing applications.
