Those orange balls on high-voltage power lines, called aerial visual warning markers, help prevent collisions by making wires visible to low-flying aircraft such as helicopters, crop dusters, and gliders. Typically about 36 inches (91 cm) wide, they are made from durable materials designed to withstand harsh weather for decades.

Some advanced models even use the power line’s magnetic field to run LED warning lights without batteries or solar panels. Mounted with specialized hardware to reduce vibration and protect the cables, these markers are a simple yet ingenious safety feature of modern infrastructure.

Engineers have created an AI-powered robotic system that uses a standard camera to both see and sense touch, eliminating the need for costly pressure sensors. By detecting tiny visual changes during contact, the system can estimate force, texture, shape, and slip in real time, potentially transforming robotics, surgery, manufacturing, prosthetics, and automation.

A five-month-old bar-tailed godwit completed an astonishing nonstop migration from Alaska to Australia, flying 8,425 miles (13,558 km) across the Pacific Ocean without stopping to eat, drink, rest, or land. Tracked by a satellite transmitter, the young bird relied on stored fat for energy and successfully completed one of the longest nonstop flights ever recorded, demonstrating the species' extraordinary endurance, navigation skills, and adaptation to long-distance migration.

Starting February 18, 2027, smartphones and many portable electronic devices sold in the EU must have batteries that can be replaced using standard tools—without specialized equipment, excessive heat, or harmful solvents. The rules also require most smartphone and tablet batteries to retain at least 80% capacity after 800 charge cycles. As part of the EU's Right to Repair initiative, the regulation aims to reduce e-waste, extend device lifespans, lower repair costs, and make repairs easier for consumers.
