As a man big on history I had to touch on this story, because one of my plays is about 1600 slavery and this always came up in my research: She sued because her father was white, and her mother was African, claiming that this made her English. Which is wild because they had no clear laws on what it was to be “black” - so this was one of the cases that set the precedent that black meant born in America with black skin. Didn’t matter if you were African or Indian - if you had black skin you were black. THIS IS THE CASE THAT MADE THE LAW - “you are what your father is”.
