“The women’s movement is the only one where we grow more radical with age.” Gloria Steinem said this on May 20, 1985, before a standing room only crowd at South Texas College of Law. Steinem’s speech on po*******hy and the first amendment was sponsored by Women in Law and the Student Public Interest Law Group. In the audience, along with students, faculty, and staff, were Houston Mayor Kathy Whitmire and Houston councilwoman Eleanor Tinsley. Steinem dedicated her life to equality and civil rights. She cofounded the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Ms. Foundation for Women, the Free to Be Foundation, and the Women’s Media Center. In 1970, she testified before the Senate on behalf of the Equal Rights Amendment. Gloria has passed away at the age of 92. You can read about her speech and visit to South Texas in our student newspaper, Annotations, https://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth144434/.
