Weaving took a small break while I was traveling, but it’s nice to be inspired by what was done before I left! Back in the Pi Hole tomorrow!

Update from the Pi Hole….Zenobia went to a new home in San Antonio and ZaSu Pitts moved in! And the Baby has arrived! She doesn’t have a name yet, but I am sure she will tell us who she is in due time!

Happy New Year from the Hole!

What a thrill it was to be part of a gallery exhibit creating conversation about racism through art. I included some books from my personal library on the settlement of Texas. Back then, slavery was welcomed into Texas.

After Emancipation, many farmers couldn’t pay their taxes (no more slaves), and the state of Texas took their farms/plantations. They were turned into prison farms and - guess who worked the land…. Imprisoned Black men (mostly), once again slave labor. For the plantations that were still privately owned, prison labor was hired. Think about Imperial Sugar Co., Sugar Land Texas. Look into the history.

Truth Be Told: An Artful Gathering of Women is a collaborative exhibit highlighting a years worth of conversations - difficult conversations - about racial injustice. When 7 Black women and 7 white women, loosely associated through the use of polymer clay as an art medium get together, the power of art is magnified. And so is the message.

We are at Two Villages Art Society in Contoocook NH. Honored to be a part.

Featured artist of the week Joey Barnes. Growing up in Texas during the racially charged 1950s, Joey weaves the profound effect of anti-integration efforts she experienced firsthand into her work by combining polymer clay, found objects, and weaving techniques. She has both undergraduate and graduate degrees from The University of Texas where she studied art under Gibbs Millikan and Charles Umlauf.

Working under the name Paprika Pi, Joey’s work includes jewelry, sculpture and mixed media using polymer clay, various metals and stones, handweaving, and found objects.
