Some industrial co-products contain biodegradable carbon—but that doesn’t automatically make them suitable for wastewater treatment. As glycerol prices rise, certain secondary streams may warrant a closer look. The key is proper qualification.

Our latest article explores when co-products may have value as carbon sources and what facilities should evaluate first. Read more: https://altiras.com/from-co-product-to-carbon-source-when-secondary-chemicals-may-have-value-in-wastewater-treatment/

A 95% removal rate sounds like a successful adsorption study. But what did it take to get there?

If achieving that result required excessive adsorbent, extended contact time, or the loss of valuable product along with the contaminant, that 95% may look much less attractive at commercial scale. That’s why removal percentage should only be part of the evaluation.

A well-designed adsorption study can help determine:
• How much media is actually required
• How contact time affects performance
• Whether the adsorbent is selectively targeting the contaminant
• Whether a lower dosage can still meet the required specification
• Whether the results make sense to pursue at scale

Our latest Altiras Labs article looks at the performance questions companies should be asking before moving from laboratory results toward commercial implementation.

Acetic acid is only one part of a much larger chemistry conversation. Ethyl acetate and butyl acetate move the discussion into industrial solvents. Potassium and sodium acetate serve very different functional applications. And changing market conditions can influence when manufacturers begin looking at different grades, sources, or chemistries.

The important point isn't that these products are interchangeable. They're not. It's that procurement teams can sometimes create more options by asking what the process requires the chemistry to do, rather than beginning and ending with the product historically purchased.

Our latest article looks beyond acetic acid at how acetate salts, esters, alternative sourcing, and secondary markets can expand the procurement conversation.

Price per gallon doesn’t tell the full story when comparing wastewater carbon sources. Glycerol, acetic acid, and sodium acetate can deliver different COD, dosing requirements, and treatment performance.

Our latest article looks at why a better comparison is often the cost of treatment, not the cost of chemicals. Read more: https://altiras.com/price-per-gallon-is-the-wrong-way-to-compare-wastewater-carbon-sources/

Off-spec doesn't necessarily mean worthless. Surplus doesn't necessarily mean waste. Across industrial facilities, valuable material sits idle because it no longer fits its original purpose.

Maybe the product is:
• Outside its original specification
• Left over from a production change
• Aging in storage
• Excess to current demand
• Part of a discontinued product line
• Taking up tank or warehouse capacity
Before writing it off or paying for disposal, determine whether another market can use it.

Altiras specializes in evaluating bulk surplus, secondary, off-spec, and co-product chemical and petroleum streams for potential resale, recovery, recycling, and beneficial reuse. With year-end approaching, this is a good time to look at the inventory you've been meaning to address.

What's sitting in your tanks, terminals, or warehouses that you don't want to carry into 2027? Send it to Altiras. Let's evaluate it.

The cheapest adsorbent isn't necessarily the lowest-cost solution.

And the media with the highest removal percentage isn't necessarily the best one either. Dosage, selectivity, treatment time, product retention, and media consumption can all affect what a treatment process ultimately costs.

Comparative adsorbent testing lets you evaluate those differences using your actual process material before committing to a media at commercial scale. Find the media that works for the operation—not just the one that looks best on a specification sheet.

Does every industrial application that uses acetic acid actually require prime material? No.

Surplus doesn't automatically mean off-spec, and off-spec for one customer doesn't automatically mean unusable for another. A plant closure, canceled production campaign, formulation change, or excess purchase can leave commercially usable acetic acid without an internal home. Even when material misses a specification, understanding what failed and by how much can completely change the conversation.

Our latest article looks at prime versus secondary acetic acid, what buyers should evaluate, and why sellers should understand what's actually in the tank before assuming disposal is the only option.

Acetate and glycerol can support the same denitrification objective, but they don’t behave the same way in the treatment process. As glycerol prices rise, that distinction becomes increasingly relevant.

Our latest article explores what facilities should consider when comparing acetate with glycerol, from COD contribution and dosing to biology and overall treatment economics. Read more: https://altiras.com/acetate-vs-glycerol-for-denitrification-similar-objective-different-biology/

December 31 will be here faster than you think. If your facility is carrying surplus, off-spec, aged, obsolete, or otherwise non-moving chemical or fuel inventory, now is the time to start evaluating it.

Waiting until December can leave very little time to:
• Characterize the material
• Identify potential buyers or reuse outlets
• Coordinate transportation
• Complete necessary documentation
• Physically move the inventory before year-end

And inventory sitting in a tank or warehouse may be doing more than taking up space. It can tie up working capital, create storage costs, occupy valuable capacity, and potentially contribute to year-end taxable inventory.
Altiras works with companies to evaluate bulk chemical and petroleum inventories and identify potential outlets through resale, recycling, recovery, or beneficial reuse.

If you already know something needs to be gone before year-end, don't make it a December problem. Send Altiras the product, volume, location, and available SDS or analytics. Let's see what options exist.

A treatment idea that works in theory can become an expensive problem at commercial scale.

How much adsorbent will you actually need? How long will treatment take? Will you lose valuable product? What happens to the economics when you're treating thousands or millions of gallons?

Those are questions worth answering before making the larger investment.

An adsorption research study can help evaluate actual materials, compare candidate adsorbents, and identify potential limitations while there's still time to change direction.

Know what works before you scale it.
