Nexus Health Systems offers a network of inpatient specialty hospitals and residential campuses for children, adolescents, young adults, and adults who need a bridge between hospital and home. You're looking for the right level of care for a 12-year-old with level 3 autism, limited verbal communication, and a seizure disorder that isn't fully controlled. He's been through two outpatient ABA programs. Both disrupted. Now you're looking at inpatient options and running into the same wall: programs that can handle behavioral complexity but not the medical piece, or medical settings that aren't equipped for his level of behavioral intensity.

What does the right placement look like for a child like this?

It looks like daily physician oversight alongside behavior analysts. Seizure monitoring and ABA programming under the same roof, reviewed by the same team. A communication-first approach that treats behavior as a signal rather than a target.

That's what the New Directions Program was built for.

Prader-Willi Syndrome is not primarily a behavioral challenge. It is a neurological one.

Hyperphagia in PWS isn't a habit or a discipline problem. It's a biological drive for food that doesn't switch off. Behavioral prompting and caloric restriction alone can't address it without an environment specifically designed for the underlying neurology.

The Jump Start Program is the only inpatient program in the country built specifically for PWS. Food security, medical oversight, and behavioral support are integrated into every part of the daily structure.

A teenage girl with borderline personality disorder and POTS isn't carrying two separate diagnoses. She's carrying one complicated clinical picture where the medical and psychiatric sides interact, aggravate each other, and need to be treated together.

Residential programs that manage only the behavioral and psychiatric side leave the medical drivers unaddressed. For this population, that's a setup for disruption.

The True North Residential Program provides medical-model residential treatment for females ages 13 to 17. Physician oversight, daily nursing care, and evidence-based therapeutic modalities are built into the structure, not added on.

Sometimes what looks like a behavioral crisis in a child with autism isn't behavioral at all. Seizure activity, GI pain, sleep disruption, and sensory overload can each look identical to dysregulation, and in a standard inpatient psychiatric setting, there's no infrastructure to tell them apart.

The New Directions Program treats the behavioral and medical picture together. For this population, treating only one side leaves the other unaddressed.

Recovery after a serious injury or illness rarely follows a straight line. This week, we recognize our patients doing the work at Nexus, and the rehabilitation teams helping them move forward.

Some adolescents don't fit cleanly into any available placement. Too medically complex for a standard psychiatric unit. Not acute enough for the ER. Not appropriate for a residential program that can't manage the medical side.

This isn't a rare edge case. It's a recognizable clinical profile: active psychiatric symptoms alongside a seizure disorder, cardiovascular condition, or other medical complexity requiring daily physician oversight.

The True North Hospital Program at Nexus Children's Hospital was built for exactly this population. Integrated medical and psychiatric care for adolescents ages 11 to 17, under one team.

When a female adolescent's behavioral and medical needs exceed what less restrictive settings can safely manage, finding the right placement is one of the most important decisions a referral source can make. The True North Residential Program at Nexus Neurorecovery Center – San Antonio is built for that patient.

The program provides a safe, structured environment for female residents ages 13 up to 17 to stabilize clinically, address trauma through evidence-based therapies, and develop the coping skills needed for a successful return to home and community. Our interdisciplinary team of psychiatrists, nurses, therapists, teachers, and behavioral staff work from a single treatment plan, so every interaction reinforces the clinical goals set for each resident. Routine visits with a physician, nurse practitioner, and psychiatrist keep medical needs monitored alongside behavioral progress.

When you refer a patient to the True North Residential Program, you are connecting her with a team that understands the complexity of her needs and is prepared to meet her where she is.

When a child with autism enters inpatient care, school shouldn't stop. In many inpatient programs, it effectively does. Academic programming is minimal, disconnected from the treatment plan, and when the child goes home, the documentation gaps follow them.

The New Directions Program integrates a Texas Education Agency (TEA) accredited education component directly into the treatment model. Academic progress and clinical progress are tracked together, by the same interdisciplinary team.
