from Mike Licona

It was a beautiful September morning in Virginia Beach. A coolness in the air announced that fall was near. I decided to walk around the neighborhood for a time of prayer. When I finished, I walked through the front door and Debbie yelled for me to come quickly. For the remainder of that day, we were glued to the television—often speechless, sometimes in tears.

Every anniversary of 9/11 for the past 25 years, I have watched videos of the towers falling, always getting a lump in my throat, often accompanied by tears. For many Americans, 9/11 was the day Islam would no longer viewed as merely Israel’s problem.

Islam is not a religion of peace. If you’re unsure of that, read the Quran. Read the hadith. Read the earliest extant biography of Muhammad, the Sirat Rasul Allah by Ibn Ishaq, written in the mid-eighth century.

Yet as Christians, we are commanded to love Muslims—not merely those who are peaceful toward us, but even those who hate us. Jesus taught, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matt. 5:44).

Yes, there are peaceful Muslims. My late friend Nabeel Qureshi had no desire to harm his non-Muslim friends when he was a Muslim. I suspect his sister and parents, who remain Muslims, bear no ill will toward non-Muslims. I can get along Muslims like them and regard them with genuine affection.

But those who follow the Quran seriously and the example of Muhammad pose a genuine danger to those of us who refuse to bend the knee to their prophet and submit to Islam. Christians should therefore be neither hateful nor naïve. We should understand Islam, learn how to answer its claims, know how to share the gospel effectively with Muslims, and pray, asking the Lord to send more workers into this field for His harvest (Luke 10:2).

As citizens, we should also cast our vote in ways that protect all of our religious liberties as long as they do not infringe on our constitutional liberties. For example, Shariah Law must never be permitted anywhere in the U.S.

And we must never forget that Jesus loves Muslims. Around the world, former Muslims often testify that their encounters with Jesus in dreams ended up leading them to leave Islam and follow Him. Nabeel Qureshi and Thomas Samuel immediately come to mind because I knew Nabeel and I know Thomas. Nabeel became a powerful warrior for God’s kingdom, as Thomas is today. God is working among Muslims!

So on this 25th anniversary of 9/11, we remember the nearly 3,000 people who were murdered that day by Islamic terrorists and the families whose lives were forever changed. Let us be prepared to combat this violent ideology with prayer, the gospel, and our vote.

Pray for Muslims. Befriend Muslims. Learn how to answer Islam. Share Jesus with Muslims.

Because our ultimate response to Islam should not merely be resistance.

It should be the gospel.
