Last week, Houston hosted the Genuine Cup, a soccer tournament for 54 teams from 54 countries with various disabilities.
The Rapid Wien team represented Austria.
The mastermind behind it is Ignacio Torras, whose generosity and, with the help of sponsors, covered everything from flights to accommodation and food. The program included the opening ceremony at the Houston Zoo, a visit to a rodeo, a game by the Harlem Globetrotters, and an Astros baseball game.
Wednesday evening, the teams were hosted by their respective consuls or consulates for a dinner. It was unforgettable to see the players' and all other participants and guests' joy during the entire week. The goal of raising awareness of people with disabilities was definitely achieved and will be carried forward in future similar and even larger events.

The Austrian Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker visited Texas for the Austria vs. Argentina game. He used the trip for business meetings and the opening of the Dallas Honorary Consulate, which covers North Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. It was a great opportunity for me to highlight Texas's business strength and Houston's status as an international powerhouse. I emphasized that Austria needs to pay more attention to Texas (as a stand-alone country, it would be the eighth-largest economy in the world), as many other European nations have already recognized in recent years.
