With violence against students and staff being a top concern among school staff, now is the ideal time to apply for funding designed specifically to help schools prevent violence.

The BJA STOP School Violence program focuses on funding three key areas:
🔸 Training to prevent school violence, including specialized training for responding to mental health crises
🔸 Development and operation of a variety of technology solutions, such as anonymous reporting systems
🔸 Development and deployment of school threat assessment teams

Who can apply? Public and private K-12 charter schools, private k-12 schools, nonprofits, independent school districts, and higher education institutions.

How can Raptor help? Raptor helps schools identify and intervene earlier against violence with
✅ a centralized system (StudentSafe) for documenting and intervening on bullying, su***de risk, and behavioral threat assessments, including anonymous concerns reporting
✅ violence prevention training through Staff Compliance Training
✅ a 24/7 anonymous reporting system for students and the community through Stay Safe. Speak Up
✅ a team of behavioral threat assessment experts through SIGMA

Frequent flyer hall pass requests are often invisible with traditional paper passes.

And understanding if there’s a pattern in the requests is hard to see without data. Repeated requests can signal a student in crisis, a concern about a class, or even that an approved IEP accommodation is happening.

In the latest episode of the podcast, Dana Angleberger, a teacher at Oakdale Middle School, and Tricia Brdecka, an assistant principal at Urbana Middle School, describe how Raptor SmartPass gave students a discreet, dignified way to advocate for what they need.

With digital hall passes, educators can spot patterns, share data with parents and case managers, and start supportive conversations instead of assuming a discipline problem.

As September draws to a close, National Su***de Prevention Month is a reminder that supporting student wellbeing requires attention year-round.

Recognizing when a student is struggling takes more than a list of warning signs.

It takes knowing students well enough to notice when something changes, and staying attentive even once a crisis has passed, work made easier when schools have a way to bring those observations together into a centralized system. https://bit.ly/4Ap6jT7

A student who mentions su***de and is dismissed as "seeking attention" rather than taken seriously can quickly go from a concern to a crisis.

The outcome often comes down to language used by adults, and it shapes whether a student feels safe enough to ask for help.

Su***de prevention starts long before a crisis, because it exists in the everyday words staff use with students and families. Small shifts, such as saying "died by su***de" instead of "committed su***de," reduce stigma and build trust over time.

Here are four best practices for talking about su***de with care and confidence: https://bit.ly/4h2Yjj6

A comprehensive approach to su***de prevention takes more than an annual campaign. It takes the right systems, practices, and people working together to support students all year long.

Join Dr. Amy Grosso and The Jed Foundation - JED's, Tony J. Walker, for a conversation on sustaining su***de prevention efforts beyond one-time initiatives, including what it means for schools as more students turn to AI for mental health support.

Back-to-school safety is often measured by whether the doors lock and the alarms work.

Those checks matter, but they are only part of what makes a campus ready for the year ahead.

The strongest plans also cover the less visible work: retraining staff, refreshing the emergency operations plan, reopening tip-reporting channels, and checking in early on students who may need support.
