Most law students don’t think about a legal recruiter until 3L fall, when they’re staring down a shorter list of open roles and meeting someone for the first time under pressure.
Start that relationship during your 2L summer, or earlier, and the recruiter has time to learn what you want out of a firm before you need an answer.
A good recruiter knows more than what’s posted. They know which Houston firms are genuinely hiring associates this year, which practice groups are understaffed, and which partners actually mentor junior associates instead of just supervising them.
At Collier Legal Search, we talk with students who reach out during 1L just to understand the Houston market. We also talk with 3Ls who show up in October with no relationship built and a deadline bearing down. Reach out to us, we’d love to meet you.
Sarah Villaseñor and Jessica Gordon Ford spent part of last week in Austin at the 2026 NALSC Symposium, the annual gathering of the National Association of Legal Search Consultants.
They came home with a notebook full of ideas and plenty of new connections with fellow legal recruiters from around the country. Conversations like these keep us sharp on where the legal market is heading, and that helps us serve the attorneys and firms we work with.
Thank you to NALSC and everyone who made the trip to Texas. We're already looking forward to next year.

Reading loads in law school don’t shrink as the semester goes on. They stack.
Skim a Torts case in week three and tell yourself you’ll remember the holding, and you’ll be hunting for it in week twelve when your outline actually needs it.
Students who stay ahead build a weekly reset, often Sunday afternoon, where they map out when each assignment is going to get done. Add cold call rotations, practice exams, and the one final worth 90% of the grade. Once deadlines live somewhere other than your memory, a surprising amount of background anxiety just goes away.

Some law students run on late nights and adrenaline. Others build a system and stick to it.
Lauren Barri, a Melbourne lawyer, credits hers to layered routines: a semester-long assignment tracker, readings finished before each class instead of after, and notes written out the day after class while it's still fresh. Saturdays are off limits entirely, no work, no studying.
She starts assignments three weeks out with a day-by-day checklist, one day to outline, two to research, five for a first draft, so the deadline never sneaks up.

Students who set a hard stop time for studying by their second week of 1L year burn out less by finals than students still winging it in March.
Law school is built to overwhelm you: dense reading, cold calls in front of eighty people you just met, a curve that ranks the whole room against itself. Most 1Ls don’t realize until October that getting through it has not only intelligence required, but how they structure their days.
Pick a stop time. Defend it the way you’d defend a filing deadline. Close the laptop at seven and it stops feeling like falling behind, because your schedule already told you it was fine to stop.

College gives you a year to find your footing. Law school doesn't.
1L grades come almost entirely from one blind, curved final, and they shape what comes next: summer positions, law review, even a transfer application.
U.S. News' advice holds up: prep over the summer, narrow your focus early, annotate as you read, show up to office hours, and pick one extracurricular that actually means something.

1L doesn't test how smart you are as much as it tests whether you have a system that holds up under pressure.
Here are some key strategies that help students survive and thrive during the first year, from building a routine and getting organized to finding the right support system and starting recruiter relationships early. Read the full list: https://collierlegal.com/1l-habits/

Happy Labor Day from Collier Legal Search. Thank you to every attorney, paralegal, and legal professional out there. Today's about recognizing the hard work you put in all year.
South Texas College of Law's Vice President of Advocacy, Professor Rob Galloway, invited Kay Egger and Mary Claire Upton to speak to the school's 65 newly named varsity advocates on August 28.
Kay and Mary Claire are STCL alumnae, former advocates themselves, and recruiters who work daily in the Greater Houston law firm and attorney marketplace. That background shaped the session. They walked students through the real differences between firms and practice areas, how the business of practicing law actually works, and why relationships and professional communication often matter as much as grades. They closed with a plea for humility, the trait that keeps a young attorney learning instead of coasting on early wins. They also pointed the students toward a resource many hadn't considered: nearly 2,000 STCL varsity advocacy alumni who are ready and willing to network with the next generation.
Kay and Mary Claire both competed for STCL's advocacy teams as students. Returning to coach the program's newest members, now ranked #2 in the nation in moot court and #6 in mock trial, meant more to them than the trophies ever did.

Most job seekers assume the interview is the whole evaluation. It isn't, and a new Express Employment Professionals survey puts numbers behind what legal recruiters have said for years.
Eighty-six percent of hiring managers said the right personality can outweigh a skills gap. Ninety-one percent said personality matters just as much as skill. And 87% said they can size up cultural fit from the first conversation, before a single technical question gets asked.
The traits that actually move the needle aren't flashy. Reliability topped the list for both hiring managers and job seekers, followed by honesty, adaptability, flexibility, and self-motivation. No one ranked "impressive resume bullet points" anywhere near the top.
Here's the part candidates often miss: 94% of job seekers said companies are reading them outside the formal interview too. Email tone. How you make small talk in the lobby. How you treat the paralegal who schedules your interview. Express CEO Bob Funk Jr. put it simply: the right personality builds trust and raises the standard for how a team works together.
For attorneys and legal staff interviewing right now, this is worth sitting with. Your qualifications get you in the room. How you show up once you're there is what gets you the offer.
