Oil-and-gas drilling technology may help unlock America’s next source of round-the-clock power.

The United States already leads the world in operating geothermal capacity, but geothermal still provides only 0.4% of U.S. utility-scale electricity. Enhanced geothermal systems could change that by reaching heat resources far beyond traditional geothermal regions.

DOE recently selected 21 projects for up to $99 million in funding, while Fervo Energy’s Cape Station project in Utah is demonstrating how horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing can be adapted for geothermal development.

Apparently, drilling technology does not care which energy tribe gets the credit.
