Operation Rip Tide in Galveston primarily refers to local public safety and volunteer deployments—such as those by community emergency response teams like the Precinct One CERT Team—activated to assist with safety patrols and crowd monitoring during major holiday weekends like Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day
The term also frequently connects to ongoing local safety efforts surrounding dangerous rip currents (often called riptides) on Galveston beaches, as well as Galveston College's mascot, Rip Tide.

Flag Warnings: Always check the beach warning flags upon arrival—green means calm, yellow means moderate risk, and red means heavy surf and dangerous currents.

What to Do If Caught in a Rip Current
Don't Fight It: Swimming against a strong current quickly exhausts your energy.
Swim Parallel: Move sideways in a direction parallel to the shoreline to escape the narrow channel of the current.
Float and Signal: If you cannot break out, float calmly and wave or call for help until assistance arrives.
