📺 HOW TO WATCH American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez on PBS

Why, oh why, did Houston Public Media NOT do more to promote the airing of this acclaimed documentary about legendary playwright and filmmaker , which first aired last night as part of the prestigious American Masters series?

➡️ The good news, if you missed it, is that there are additional showings today (Wed. Oct. 7) at 3 p.m. and overnight (Thursday Oct. 😎 at 3 a.m., so you can watch set to record if those times aren’t convenient.

In tracing Valdez’s personal history, the documentary created a detailed portrait of Mexican migrants and farmworkers in the U.S. and of Valdez’s dedication to tell those stories on his own when faced for decades with a reluctant entertainment industry.

The history of his iconic “Zoot Suit” production is fascinating, particularly how it was received on Broadway after receiving acclaim in Los Angeles and national attention.

Scenes from a celebration: A salute to Hispanic Heritage Month last Saturday hosted by Casa Ramirez FOLKART Gallery and Pancho Claus at the Pancho Claus Art & Education Center. We had fun offering items in our “little store” — La Tiendita — sharing Latino Heroes & Legends, dancing and listening to the music of Jesus Lozano & Maria Lozano (BOSSA II), and enjoying our longtime and new friends. The 37th Annual Accordion Kings & Queens Concert comes to Houston on Saturday, October 10!

Presented by Texas Folklife, this Houston tradition celebrates the accordion across Texas communities, from polka and conjunto to zydeco, Cajun, Tejano, and swing. This year's lineup features Rockin' Dopsie Jr. and The Zydeco Twisters, Jude Moreau and the Bon Temps Playboys, and Susan Torres y Conjunto Los Pinkys.
