One day, there will be a last voicemail, a last conversation, and a last time hearing the voice of someone you love. The question is: will you ever know when it's the last time you'll hear them speak?

Five years ago, I used my audio equipment and recorded my grandparents sharing their life story—their memories, struggles, victories, and how they built a life together. I mainly wanted to preserve their voices. ALL of my living grandparents, because I knew they - like all of us, will not be here forever.

I spoke and recorded with Marnie - the Grandmother from my Dad's side - Marilyn, who is now 96 and still a ray of sunshine on this planet. She was the biggest supporter of my writing and poetry at a very young age, encouraging me express my emotions with pen and paper.

This year, cancer took my grandma - the woman who I lived with and raised me for the first years of my life. Her name is Miriam. Leaving behind my Papa, the only father figure in my life who has never let me down - her husband of 64 years.

Now, that recording is one of the few ways my grandfather can still hear her laugh and tell their story.

It reminded me that while memories of our loved ones will fade and photos are precious but they are eternally silent, a voice can bring someone back into the room.

If someone in your life has stories worth preserving, don’t wait. You don't need special equipment - we ALL have a voice memo recorder app on our phones – iPhone and androids both have it. USE IT. You won’t regret it. Check your voicemails too. Grandparents love leaving messages, mine always did and you can save them to your phone.

Ask the questions: where did you grow up, how did you meet each other, just talk. Record the conversation, and save their voices. One day, it may become one of your most treasured possessions.

Heaven gained an angel. How blessed that instead of praying with and for her, we can now pray TO her. Rest peacefully, Grandma. I love you a bushel & a peck, and a hug around the neck. ❤️ your little angel.

Happy to have been blessed with the best mommy and married into another amazing mother in law who we’ve been able to share amazing adventures with over the years. ❤️
