The original porch was barely a step. 👣

My father bought this house in the early ‘90s as a place for family to always have in Third Ward. But the porch — the part of a Houston house where neighbors talk, kids play, and grown folks unwind — was an afterthought. Just a stoop. No real room to gather.

So when we took her down to the bones and built her back, we made the porch four times bigger. Full length of the house. Partially covered. Built to hold a crowd.

Because Third Ward porches have always been gathering places. The grandmother’s chair. The Saturday afternoon. The kids running between yards. The neighbor who pulls up to say hey.

She’s not finished yet. But she’s getting ready for her people.

Did you know all five of these icons are from Houston? 🖤

Patrick Swayze learned to dance right here in the city. Dennis Quaid walked the halls of Bellaire High School. Jim Parsons — yes, Sheldon Cooper himself — is a Houston boy through and through. Alexis Bledel grew up speaking Spanish in Houston before the world knew her as Rory Gilmore. And Michael Strahan played at Texas Southern right in our Third Ward neighborhood before conquering the NFL and morning television.
