Sharing the history of Texas Southern University šŸ… Independently run by TSU graduate and journalist Amber Land

Before Texas Southern University had a campus, it called Jack Yates High School home.

Beginning in 1927, Houston Colored Junior College, which would eventually become Texas Southern University, held evening classes Jack Yates High School

These evening classes provided higher education and training opportunities for Black Houstonians at a time when access to college education was limited. By 1934, it was renamed Houston College for Negroes. As enrollment grew, so did the need for a campus of its own.

With support from Houston’s Black community and local donors, the college secured 53 acres in Houston’s Third Ward and built its first building: the T.M. Fairchild Building.

The Fairchild Building still stands on TSU’s campus today.

Meet Hyland Stuart. He was the first student to enroll at Texas State University for Negroes, now Texas Southern University.

Stuart stood in line for two hours and more than 2,000 students followed him to the registration tables. Classes began one week later.

He died in 2013 at 83 years old.

TSU Proud!

*CORRECTION: Yearbook records shows his last name as Stewart. After some research, his correct last name appears to be Stuart.

On November 15, 1950, a group of Texas Southern University women chartered the Gamma Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha became the first sorority established for Black college women at a time when they were excluded from white spaces.

The nine founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha set a national standard for scholarship, service, and sisterhood.

Their legacy took root at TSU through the Gamma Psi Chapter and continues to inspire each new generation of young women to step forward with pride, service, and sisterhood.

Happy Founders’ Day! šŸ©·šŸ’š
