Did you know that the grain appearance of the wood that is used in your furniture depends on where and how the boards were cut from the forest log?

FLAT SAWN is most typical because it is the quickest and least expensive method of milling the log. The grain appearance is often described as a "cathedral pattern" because of similarities to church cathedral shapes.

RIFT SAWN lumber is the best for structural integrity because it resists the bowing, bending, and cupping that occurs with flat sawn lumber. The grain lines are parallel and run the length of the board.

QUARTER SAWN is the most desirable, especially in oak lumber,, because of the cross-grain streaks and flecks that appear perpendicular to the typical lengthwise grain lines. These streaks are actually the medullary rays of the wood fibers that grow from the center of the tree outward towards the bark.
