This month's foster needs are focused on pajamas! Often, children entering foster care bring very little with them- a new duffle bag and a fresh pair of new pajamas can make a world of difference for those who often times have nothing of their own to bring with them as they enter a very scary time in their lives.

When most people think about foster care, they think about what happens after a child is placed with a foster family.

But what about the hours before that?

Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics reminds us that children entering foster care have often already experienced significant trauma. They may have faced abuse, neglect, violence, instability, or other adverse childhood experiences. Even when removal from home is necessary for a child's safety, that separation can be traumatic and overwhelming (1).

Imagine being a child who has just left everything familiar behind.

Now imagine spending those first hours waiting in an office or conference room while adults work to find a safe placement.

At Foster House Project, we believe those first hours matter.

Our mission is simple: lessen the shock children experience when they are first removed from home by providing a warm, welcoming, home-like environment where they can rest, eat, play, and receive comfort while caseworkers secure a foster or kinship placement.

Trauma-informed care teaches us that safety, predictability, comfort, and compassionate relationships can help reduce stress during difficult transitions. That's why we're working to create a place where children can experience dignity and care during one of the hardest days of their lives.

Every child deserves more than a waiting room. They comfort and the reminder that they matter.
