Modern realist painter Stephanie Spay takes you behind the process of her Harrison Gallery show, Pursuit of the Muse.
Spay works in oil to create luminous portraits, figures, and still lifes that invite viewers to pause and sense subtle human connections. Her work has gained national recognition from Oil Painters of America and the National Portrait Society and is held in the Indiana State Museum’s permanent collection.

After facing the realities of preparing for a solo show while also expecting another baby, painter Lauren Saunders turned to two of her good friends, whom she knew could contribute works that seamlessly integrate the themes of motherhood and home life: Stephanie Spay and Kate Orr.
In this season of preparation, Saunders still prioritized this show and created a series of still lifes that perfectly capture the home life of a busy family, depicting the scrawled drawings of a young child or a child's toy set next to a centerpiece on a table.
Each piece in Family Matters is a perfect reminder of how raising children weaves its way through every aspect of a parent's life, and all the joy and chaos that comes with it.

This fascination with the in-between stemmed from Marsh-Watson experiencing many life transitions at the same time as loved ones in her life were going through transitions of their own. "The space between what was and what will be," is how she describes it.

We're continuing our intern intros with Vivian!
"I'm currently a junior at Herron High School, and have recently taken on the roles of stage manager and historian for our fall production of Urinetown, and the Hair and Makeup Designer for the Thespian All-State show, Middletown.
Even though I haven't made it to nearly as many First Fridays as I'd like, the Harrison Center has been forming my love of art since before I could walk."

"During his internship, Park supports exhibitions, special events, and programs including the Bloombox music and arts festival, while learning firsthand how a nonprofit arts organization supports artists and its community.
Outside of the arts, Park has a growing interest in conservation, the environment, and the outdoors."

Jason Bailey's paintings invite viewers to slow down and see the beauty that everyday life in Indianapolis offers.
Titled A Closer Look, Bailey's artwork features scenes from Old Northside, Monument Circle, Fountain Square, and many other familiar places. Whether working in the studio or en plein air, Bailey's attention to detail in his painting practice offers a deeper look at places that might otherwise go unnoticed around Indianapolis.

Kyrie Lewis's watercolor paintings are full of mystery, made with layered washes that take on an atmospheric quality. This exhibit, accurately titled Whimsy, invites viewers into the artist's unique worldbuilding.
"I find the human form endlessly fascinating and full of storytelling possibilities," says Lewis, whose figures feel like familiar fairytale characters that are inviting you into a new world.
Lewis not only imbues her paintings with a sense of whimsy but also transforms the gallery space with fabric installations, bringing the ethereal elements of her paintings into the three-dimensional space. You can experience the whimsy for yourself throughout the month of September in the Hank & Dolly's Gallery.

This immersive exhibition celebrates the beauty, resilience, and rich cultural heritage of Afghanistan through a collection of paintings and handmade kites by Afghan artist Qahar Behzad.
In recent years, this pastime has become a symbol of resilience. Under Taliban rule, recreational activities including kite-flying have been banned, but people have continued to fly kites as an act of hope and resistance.
