The Cradle of Indianapolis Hockey & Basketball Champions
More in our series about the Coliseum at the State Fairgrounds!
Before Gainbridge Fieldhouse or Market Square Arena existed, the Coliseum was the epicenter of professional sports in Indiana. It hosted the Indiana Pacers during their legendary American Basketball Association (ABA) era from 1967 to 1974, where coach Bobby "Slick" Leonard led the team to three ABA Championships (1970, 1972, 1973). On the ice, the Coliseum is the historic home of Indianapolis hockey. Eight of the city’s nine professional and junior hockey championship teams raised their banners under this roof, spanning legendary minor league franchises like the AHL Indianapolis Capitals, IHL Indianapolis Ice, and ECHL Indy Fuel.

Since the Indiana State Fair kicks into full gear this weekend, and the rinks are being utlized for the fair, we are going to use this downtime to cover some of the history of the Coliseum (and the impact the space has had on many sports organizations and other imporant historical events)!
We'll start at the beginning! Built during the Great Depression as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration (WPA), Corteva Coliseum originally opened in August 1939 as the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum. Costing $1.2 million to construct, it quickly became the premier multi-purpose entertainment, agricultural, and sports venue in Central Indiana. It was also Indy's largest event center in the state for many decades! Over its 80+ year timeline, the building has evolved through several naming eras: from the original Coliseum to the Pepsi Coliseum (1991–2012), Fairgrounds Coliseum, Indiana Farmers Coliseum (2014–2024), and today, Corteva Coliseum. Following a $53 million modern renovation completed in 2014, the venue preserves its classic exterior architecture while offering modern stadium seating and amenities.
