Indiana's only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center | A leader in cancer research To learn more, visit www.cancer.iu.edu.

The Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center is Indiana’s only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center and a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. Based at Indiana University, we focus on cancer research, education and clinical trials—not patient care. Our researchers and physician–scientists are discovering how cancer works, developing new therapies, and training the next generation of cancer researchers. While our healthcare partners provide treatment, we lead the research that fuels tomorrow’s cures. To learn about our patient care partner, IU Health, visit www.iuhealth.org.

For someone facing breast cancer, progress can mean more than treating the disease. It can also mean reducing the lasting effects of treatment and making decision based on what matters to that individual.

Two IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers explore how breast cancer care is becoming more personalized in the Indianapolis Business Journal’s Business Cares: Breast Cancer Awareness edition.

Carla Fisher, MD, writes about advances in breast cancer surgery aimed to reducing long-term side effects and protecting quality of life, including approaches designed to reduce lymphedema risk and preserve sensation after mastectomy.

Rina Yadav, DO, explains why personalization can begin even before a breast cancer diagnosis. Family history, breast density, genetics and other individual factors can help inform screening and prevention decisions, while characteristics of a tumor can help guide treatment after diagnosis.

Together, their perspectives show how research can help patients and their care teams make decisions based not only on cancer, but also the individual.

A $10 million gift is expanding brain cancer research at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center—and honoring the legacy of '94 Indiana University alumnus Jeff Schwarz.

The gift established the new Jeff Schwarz Center for Neuro-Oncology Research, where scientists and clinicians will work together to better understand brain cancer, brain metastases and other conditions affecting the brain and nervous system.

Jeff was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, in 2022 and died from the disease in 2023. Through their gift, his family is creating new opportunities for researchers to collaborate and work toward new therapies for patients.

From 8 to 72 years old, basketball players from across the country came together for a day on the court in support of cancer research.

The inaugural Gus Macker tournament benefiting the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center brought 82 teams from 14 states to the Pacers Athletic Center.

Our physician-scientists traded their white coats for basketball shoes as members of the “Hemo-Globetrotters” and “BMT All-Stars,” joining players on the court.

Take a look at some of our favorite moments from the tournament.

Thank you to official tournament sponsor Republic Airways for helping make this community event possible.

Exercise can help people with cancer manage side effects, maintain strength and support recovery—but knowing how to move safely and effectively isn't always easy.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Tarah Ballinger, MD, and exercise physiologist Danielle Halsey, MS, share what research tells us about physical activity and cancer, along with practical ways to adapt movement to your needs and abilities.

Dr. Ballinger, medical director of the MOVE program and the Vera Bradley Foundation Scholar in Breast Cancer Research, explains the evidence behind exercise and cancer outcomes. Danielle offers guidance for putting that evidence into practice, from preparing for treatment to rebuilding strength afterward.

Watch this Simon Says conversation for research-backed strategies to help you stay active before, during and after cancer treatment.

F3+R: Faith, Family, Fellowship, Research has been supporting precision medicine research at IU for years, and that commitment continued at this year’s Grease the Wheels for Hope.

The 9th Annual Fundraiser benefited the Timothy A. Johnston Fund for Precision Medicine Research at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Since 2019, F3+R has raised more than $1 million to support this work. Their generosity is helping researchers better understand the unique characteristics of each patient’s tumor and identify potential targets for treatments tailored to their cancer.

Today, that support is helping IU researchers study lung, breast, pancreatic, ovarian, colon and other cancers.

We’re grateful to F3+R and everyone who has contributed to this effort over the years. Thank you for continuing to invest in cancer research and the discoveries still ahead.

Fundraisers, volunteers, donors and others in the St. Baldrick’s community have helped turn their support for children with cancer into $10.3 million in new research funding.

The funding from the St. Baldrick's Foundation will support research across 26 institutions, including work by the cancer center’s Jia Shen, PhD, a St. Baldrick’s Scholar.

Dr. Shen is focused on a major challenge in treating glioblastoma: preventing this fast-growing brain tumor from coming back after treatment. His team is studying glioblastoma stem cells, which can resist treatment and contribute to recurrence.
