💡 Relay Testing Isn't Optional: It's the Last Line of Defense Before a Fault Becomes a Disaster

Protective relays are the brains of your electrical system. When something goes wrong; a fault, an overload, an arc flash event, relays are what decide whether the system isolates the problem in milliseconds or lets it cascade into equipment damage, extended downtime, or worse, an injury.

Relay function testing and commissioning as part of Acceptance Testing verifies:

⚡ Correct pickup and time-delay settings match the coordination study
⚡ Trip units actually trip, and trip the right breaker
⚡ CT and PT ratios and polarity are wired correctly (a shorted or reversed CT can render protection useless without anyone knowing)
⚡ Communication and logic schemes. like breaker failure or bus differential, function as designed
⚡ Settings match what engineering specified: not what got left on the relay from the factory or a prior job

Here's the reality: a relay can look perfectly installed and still fail to operate correctly. Without functional testing at commissioning, you don't find out until a real fault happens, and by then it's too late to fix it cheaply.

We've seen firsthand how a single miscoordinated or mis-wired relay setting can turn a routine fault into a multi-hour outage instead of a momentary blink.

At HVTS, we perform relay function testing and Acceptance Testing per IEEE/NETA standards, giving engineers and plant managers documented proof that protection schemes will perform exactly as designed, before they're ever called on to.

I'm not there to pass or fail your house.

I get this one a lot. A home inspection isn't a pass/fail test. I'm there to visually inspect the applicable systems and components within the inspection scope, document what I observe and give you a clearer picture of the property's condition that day.

No grades. No crystal ball. Just the information I can gather.

HVTS wouldn't be where it is today without the knowledge shared by the broader electrical testing community.

We're grateful for every group, forum, and individual who's contributed expertise along the way, from technical standards discussions to hard-won lessons from the field. That shared knowledge directly shapes how we approach testing, diagnostics, and service for our clients.

Some of the most valuable lessons haven't come from success stories, they've come from failures, near-misses, and mistakes others were willing to talk about openly. Learning what not to do has been just as important to our growth as learning what works.

Our industry moves fast. Standards evolve, equipment changes, and best practices get refined through real-world experience. Staying connected to that broader community, not working in a silo, is part of how we keep raising our own bar at HVTS.

So thank you to everyone who shares what they know, the wins and the setbacks alike. It strengthens the whole industry, and it's made us better at what we do.

🪫🔋 Substation batteries: your protection system's single point of failure

DC battery banks power trip coils, relays, and control circuits. If the bank can't deliver rated current under fault conditions, the breaker doesn't open, no matter how good your switchgear is.

The problem: float voltage and visual inspection can look perfectly normal on a battery that's lost most of its actual capacity. Degraded internal cells don't show up until you load-test them.

What we check:

• Capacity testing under load: the only real proof of performance
• Internal ohmic/impedance testing to flag failing cells early
• Specific gravity (flooded cells) and float voltage
• Connection resistance/torque: loose terminals are a common silent failure
• Charger output, to confirm the bank is actually held at proper float

We test per IEEE/NETA standards. If your battery maintenance program is visual-only, it's not telling you what you need to know.

Overdue for battery testing? Let's get it on the schedule. Jeff -serv.com

💭 Why Relay Testing Comes Down to Training, Not Just Test Sets ⚡️

Protective relays are the last line of defense between a fault and a catastrophic equipment failure. But a $40,000 test set doesn’t mean much in the hands of a technician who doesn’t understand the protection scheme they’re validating.

Every relay commissioning job starts with the same question: what is this relay actually supposed to do in this system? Not just “does it trip at the right pickup value,” but how it coordinates with upstream and downstream devices, what happens under CT saturation, and whether the settings file actually matches the utility’s or engineer’s intended coordination study.

We’ve walked into jobs where a relay passed a basic pickup test but had a miscoordinated time-current curve that would have taken out an entire bus instead of clearing a single feeder fault. That’s not a hardware problem, it’s a training gap. It only gets caught by someone who understands protection philosophy, not just how to run a test script.

That’s why our field engineers are certified and trained specifically on relay logic, coordination studies, and secondary injection testing across the major relay platforms our clients run, not just checked out on a test set.

Relay testing done right protects your equipment, your people, and your uptime. Done as a checkbox exercise, it protects nothing.

Need commissioning or periodic testing on your protection scheme? Let’s talk about what your relays are actually supposed to do: and make sure they do it.
