Philanthropy is changing. And so must the way we work together.
At a recent OC Forum event, “New Rules, New Roles: Philanthropy in an Era of Change,” community leaders explored what’s next for philanthropy in Orange County, from more flexible funding models to stronger cross-sector collaboration.
OCCF’s Chief Operating Officer Cathleen Otero joined fellow nonprofit leaders to share insights on how philanthropy can better support organizations, respond to complex community needs, and build a more resilient future.
The takeaway? Meeting today’s challenges will require new approaches, unlikely partners, and a willingness to think differently about how we resource the work.

Give Before You Sell: How Business Owners Can Maximize Philanthropy🤝
For business owners, when you give can be just as important as how you give. In this week's Orange County Business Journal Leader Board, OCCF Board Chair and Partner with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, John Williams, shares the story of OCCF donor Greg Palmer, who discovered while working in private equity that equity in a business can be among the most tax-efficient assets to give, but only if the gift is made before a sale. Greg later leveraged that insight when planning his own business exit, turning a smart philanthropic strategy into meaningful financial benefits.
