Building a Future Without Homelessness
“It’s not just four walls.”
For Karen Garner, working alongside families in Grizzly Flats brought a new appreciation for everything the word “home” represents—the memories, relationships, and moments that happen within it.
Five years after the Caldor Fire, families are finding a pathway home through a collaboration between El Dorado County, HomeAid Sacramento , the building industry, and community partners.
🎙️ Grizzly Flats: Rebuilding Home After the Caldor Fire, the newest episode of Unsheltered Conversations, is out now.

“What do you need? How can I help?”
For Christopher Brown, that willingness to step up is part of what makes the Sacramento region’s building community so special.
Builders, trades, suppliers, and partners have rallied around families in Grizzly Flats who are still rebuilding after the Caldor Fire—bringing their skills and resources together to help create a pathway home.
Hear Christopher share more about the people behind this effort in the next episode of Unsheltered Conversations, releasing tomorrow, September 29.

Sometimes the best way to move forward is to step away from the day-to-day and reconnect with the people beside you.
This week, the HomeAid America team gathered in the Colorado mountains for our 2026 staff retreat — affectionately known as Camp HomeAid.
Our purpose was simple but important: reconnect with one another, celebrate what we’ve accomplished, explore new ideas, and return to our work with a stronger shared vision for the future.
Over several days, we talked about who we are as individuals and as a team, explored our different working and communication styles, celebrated wins, challenged ourselves to think differently, and looked ahead to the opportunities before HomeAid in 2027. We also made time for good food, laughter, a little Colorado exploring, and the relationships that make this team special.
One of the themes we kept coming back to was that we don’t all need to think or work the same way. In fact, our different perspectives and strengths are part of what makes us better. The opportunity is to understand those differences and use them intentionally in service of our mission.
We left Camp HomeAid with individual commitments and a shared “trail map” for where we want to go together.
Most importantly, we left reminded that Building a Future Without Homelessness starts with a strong team committed to doing the work together.
Grateful for this team and excited for the trail ahead.

Term of the Month: Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
Understanding the complexities of homelessness starts with understanding the language surrounding it.
Substance use disorder (SUD) is a health condition that affects a person’s brain and behavior and can lead to difficulty controlling the use of substances such as alcohol, medications, or other drugs.
Terms like these often come up in conversations about homelessness, housing, and supportive services. Knowing what they mean helps us better understand the challenges individuals and families may face—and equips us to have more informed, compassionate conversations about meaningful solutions.

“Our home no longer looks like a cave. It looks like a home.”
That’s what one mother shared after receiving beds for her family.
Before, they had been sleeping on the floor. Their backs hurt, and that pain followed the children into their school day. After receiving beds, their mother said the family felt supported—and their space finally felt like home.
It’s a reminder that meeting one basic need can have an impact far beyond the bed itself.

They started the day as competitors. Before long, they were helping each other finish the job.
That’s what stood out during this HomeAid North Texas bed build: people from across the industry choosing to volunteer, work side by side and rally around the impact these beds could have for children and families.
It became about much more than building furniture. It became about community, connection and realizing what a safe place to sleep can mean for someone going through a difficult season.
🎧 Tomorrow, September 15, hear the full conversation in a new episode of Unsheltered Conversations: More Than a Bed: Building Security, Stability, and Hope for Children and Families.

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the courage of the first responders, service members, and everyday people who stepped forward in the face of tragedy.
We also remember the strength that can come from a community standing together—with compassion, service, and care for one another.
May we continue to carry that spirit forward.

We’re building more than housing. 🏡
At the BIASC Building Industry Show, Scott Larson joined HomeAid Orange County Los Angeles and HomeAid Inland Empire to connect with the builders, trade partners, manufacturers, designers, and industry leaders who help make HomeAid’s work possible.
Those relationships matter.
A conversation can become a partnership.
A partnership can become a project.
And a project can help someone take another step toward stability and a new beginning.

What can one conversation lead to?
For HomeAid, it can lead to a new relationship, a new partnership, or even the possibility of serving an entirely new community.
At National Association of Home Builders' Association Management Conference, Robin Arnett, Chief Expansion Officer, HomeAid America, connected with Executive Officers and HBA staff from across the country to share HomeAid’s mission and learn more about the needs and opportunities within their communities.
Those conversations are already continuing—from Raleigh and Charlotte to Nashville and Central Florida—as HomeAid explores where the building industry can help create meaningful, lasting solutions to homelessness.
