Power Talk Therapy

Terry Crews started talking about his po*******hy addiction in his 2014 memoir "Manhood," and again in a Facebook video series in February 2016 he called "Dirty Little Secret." He made it public on purpose. His whole argument is that the secrecy is what gives an addiction its power, and that naming it out loud in front of everyone is how you take that power back.

For years he kept it hidden, even from the people closest to him. He has pushed back hard on anyone who told him p**n addiction wasn't a real thing. By his own measure, the line was simple: if day turned into night and he was still watching, that was a problem. That was him.

The cost showed up at home. Crews has been married to Rebecca King-Crews since July 29, 1989. They were college sweethearts and have five children. Around 2009 and 2010, the secrecy nearly ended the marriage. After she confronted him and he finally told her everything, she was devastated and walked out. They separated, but they did not divorce.

To deal with it, Crews checked into rehab for the addiction. They went through counseling and rebuilt the marriage on full transparency, and they reconciled. He has now been in recovery for more than 14 years. The two of them have since spoken openly together about the healing, and they describe the marriage as stronger than it was before.

His reason for going public was never about getting his wife back. It was about getting his own life back, and about telling anyone carrying the same secret that recovery is real and the shame is the first thing that has to go.
