Abstract Chimp

Most shoes now arrive as a left and a right. That was not always the case.

For centuries, many European shoes were formed around a straight last: one solid shape that could serve either foot. The shoe began without a built in side. Wearing it helped finish the shape.

The last still comes first. Before leather, canvas or rubber meets a foot, someone has already made decisions about width, curve, volume and proportion.

The ground makes the first move.

Mechanoreceptors in the soles detect pressure, vibration, movement and stretch. Your brain combines those signals with information from your eyes, muscles, joints and inner ear, quietly adjusting your balance and next step before the change ever becomes a conscious thought.
