Lamar Life Building

It's National Skyscraper Day!
When it first graced the Capital City's skyline, The Lamar Life Building soared as Jackson's first skyscraper. Located in the heart of Downtown Jackson, Mississippi, The Lamar Life Building has a rich history exemplified within its architecture and intricate detailing, with notable features including the illuminated 35-foot clock tower with a 40-foot flagpole and its whimsical gargoyles. This historic landmark sits across Capitol Street from the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion, and adjacent to St. Andrew’s Cathedral. It was originally built as the home of the oldest Mississippi-based insurance company, Lamar Life, under the direction of vice president and general manager at the time of construction, W.C. “Christian” Welty, father of beloved Mississippi author, Eudora Welty. Construction began in 1923, was completed by the end of 1924, and dedicated on February 17, 1925. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this Building still stands as one of the most distinctive and beloved structures in Downtown Jackson.

❤️We've gone RED to help raise awareness of heart health and in recognition of Wear Red Day, part of American Heart Month! This year observed on Friday, February 6th, it is a day dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease, prevention and early detection, particularly among women. This annual event encourages people to wear red clothing and accessories to show their support for heart health and to promote heart disease prevention.
Schedule a heart health checkup with your healthcare provider. Regular checkups and screenings are important for early detection and prevention of heart disease and stroke.
