Kalamazoo Institute of Arts presents Resilience — A Sansei Sense of Legacy Aug. 8–Nov. 1

Told from the point of view of Sansei (third generation) Japanese Americans, this exhibition of works by eight artists reflects on the effect of the forced imprisonment of Japanese Americans during World War II as it resonated from generation to generation.

The exhibition features works in a variety of mediums including paper, ceramics, photography and metal to express moments of deeply felt pain and reluctant acceptance.

James C. Westin Gallery presents Survival of the Species: Works of Randy Walker Aug. 7–28.

An exhibition combining illustrations by Randy Walker with ekphrastic poetry created by local writers and inspired by those works, will be featured at the gallery located inside the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, 359 S. Kalamazoo Mall, Suite 203.

Walker's illustrations focus on how humans treat animals with the goal of encouraging reflection in the viewer. An opening reception with the artist will be held at the Westin Gallery at 6 p.m. Aug. 7.

At 7 p.m. Aug. 12, eight poets will give readings at the gallery of ekphrastic poetry, which are vivid descriptions or responses to Walker's illustrations. Participating poets include Deb Eisenbise, Karen French, Arnold Johnston, Elizabeth Kerlikowske, Michelle Klee, Marsha Meyer, Christine Parks and Deborah Ann Percy.
