Tomorrow, State Representative Matt Longjohn will be visiting Texas Township as part of his monthly visits to communities throughout his district.

Yesterday, our community made an investment in the future of fire and emergency services, and we are incredibly grateful for the trust you’ve placed in the Texas Township Fire Department.

Thank you to every resident who attended a meeting, asked thoughtful questions, shared conversations with neighbors, and took the time to vote. Your engagement helped shape an informed decision, and we sincerely appreciate your support.

This investment allows us to continue building a department that is prepared to meet the needs of our growing community while remaining responsible stewards of every tax dollar. Our firefighters have always been committed to serving Texas Township with professionalism, compassion, and dedication, and we will continue to serve our community with that same commitment every day.

Today is Election Day!

If you're heading to the polls, remember to review both sides of your ballot before submitting it to ensure you've seen everything that's included.

You may also notice increased traffic around polling locations throughout the community. Please use extra caution while driving, watch for pedestrians crossing near polling places, and allow yourself a little extra travel time.

On August 4, 2026, you will find the Texas Township Fire Department millage proposal on the ballot.

Our department works hard to provide transparency about who we are, what we do, and how we prepare to deliver the highest quality emergency services to our most important priority: you, our residents.

Over the past several weeks, we have created a community spotlight series to help educate and inform. This effort has included a 15 minute video overview of your fire department and how we operate, along with several short 2 to 5 minute videos highlighting current challenges, comparing our dedicated funding to neighboring communities, and explaining the improvements that would be possible if voters approve dedicated fire department millage funding.

Also shared is a brief article recently published by the Kalamazoo Gazette. Our goal throughout this process has been simple: to provide factual information so residents can make an informed decision.

Regardless of the outcome on August 4, I want to assure you that when the ballots are counted on August 5, your Texas Township Fire Department will continue to be there for you, doing the very best job we can for our community.

We sincerely hope the information we have shared has helped you better understand why we were compelled to seek a change from our previous funding model and why we believe this proposal is important for the future of fire and emergency services in Texas Township.

Texas Township is seeking voter approval for a new millage to expand fire department staffing and fund equipment as population grows.

It is your constitutional right ... use it!!

The Township Office will be open tomorrow, Saturday, August 1st, from 8am-4pm for absentee and voter registration only.

The National Weather Service's confidence in severe weather impacting Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan has increased significantly today after several days of uncertainty. Current forecasts indicate a high likelihood of severe thunderstorms affecting the area this afternoon and early evening.

The primary threat will be damaging straight-line winds, with gusts of 60 to 70 mph being likely. Heavy rainfall may also lead to temporary localized flooding, particularly in low-lying urban areas and locations with poor drainage. Most of the area is forecasted to receive 0.5 to 1 inch of rain, though isolated small pockets could receive up to 3 inches in a short period of time.

There is also a limited threat of other severe weather hazards. The probability of damaging hail in the Kalamazoo area is approximately 15%, while the risk of isolated tornadoes remains low at 2–4%, primarily along or near the leading edge of the storm line.

The storm is currently expected to arrive in the Kalamazoo area between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, with the storm passing through by approximately 6:00 PM. The National Weather Service does not anticipate additional severe weather after this event. The following days are expected to feature seasonable conditions, with highs in the 80s, lower humidity, and no severe storm activity.

The City of Kalamazoo Emergency Management Division will continue coordinating closely with the National Weather Service and will provide updates as conditions warrant. Please follow Kalamazoo City Emergency Management page for updates.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts throughout the day, have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, and be prepared to seek shelter immediately if a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning is issued.

Texas Township voters can vote early at four sites in the County from July 25 - August 2, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM: Kalamazoo Expo Center, Portage Parks & Recreation Department, Douglass Community Association, and the Fetzer Center.
