A real estate developer, a banker, and a CPA walk into a [sushi] bar...

Sounds like the start of a bad joke.

In reality, it was just three couples escaping the weekly chaos for a few hours.

Great sushi. Plenty of laughs. Very little business talk.

Nights like these are a good reminder that while careers matter, the relationships we build outside of work matter even more.

Grateful for good friendsโ€”and for wives who are always up for a date night.

July was... busy.

I'm pretty sure my Outlook calendar filed for workers' comp.

A few highlights:

Welcomed some incredible new clients.
Continued building an amazing team.
Recorded more podcast interviews than ever before.
Invested more in marketing than I ever have.
Made a few decisions that were uncomfortable today but will make us better tomorrow.

The biggest lesson?

Growing a business isn't about becoming better at doing the work.

It's about becoming better at building the people, systems, and culture that allow the work to happen without you being involved in every decision.

That's a transition I'm still learning.

Some days I feel like I have it figured out.

Other days... my to-do list humbly reminds me that I do not.

Either way, I'm grateful for the people who trust us, the team we're building, and the opportunity to keep growing.

Here's to August. Let's do it again. ๐Ÿ’ช

The look: LUCA cap on, coffee in hand, notebook open, ready for strategy meeting #47.

What you don't see: the spreadsheet on my other screen held together by formulas and hope.

Confidence is 90% caffeine and 10% pretending row 12 isn't broken.

"But it's a tax write-off!"

Cool. Did you need the $80K truck, or did you need the write-off?

Because those are two very different questions, and only one of them is a good reason to buy something.

This is what we call letting the tax tail wag the dog... making a business decision because of the tax benefit, not because it actually makes sense for your business.

A deduction is nice. It's still not a reason to spend money you didn't need to spend. Sorry, not sorry... ๐Ÿš—

Client walks in overpaying in taxes.

We say: "oil and gas."

Client saves $37,000.

No, we don't own a rig. Yes, this is a real, legal tax strategy

This is what proactive tax planning actually looks like (most of the time).

Last night: power-walking to dinner, frantically texting my son back before he sends the follow-up "?????" (iykyk)
..and I walked directly into a tree. Full speed. In public. Recalibrated like nothing happened and kept walking. If you saw me, no, you didn't.

My wife looked at me and said "please don't turn this into a post about taxes."

So naturally: unlike that tree, a surprise tax bill is 100% avoidable with quarterly planning.

Sorry babe. Some things I just can't help.

Told the family we needed a "quick" photo on the dock.

45 minutes, 4 sunset attempts, and one kid asking "are we done yet" later ... we got it.

Turns out getting 4 people to smile at the same time is harder than getting a client through an S-Corp election ๐Ÿ‘€ .

A day in the life of a CPA during planning season:

6am: Coffee. โ˜•๏ธ
7am: More coffee.
9am-6pm: Spreadsheets, client calls, a client asking "wait, what's a K-1 again?", more spreadsheets, and apparently enough camera gear to make it look like I have a podcast.
6:15pm: Stare into the distance.
6:16pm: More coffee.

Glamorous? No. Worth it when a client saves $30K they didn't know was on the table? Absolutely.

Tax myth, busted in 16 seconds:

Financing a business vehicle? Only the interest on that payment is deductible. Not the principal.

The principal isn't an expense - it's just you paying down debt. (Sorry, I don't make the rules. The IRS does. They're not fun at parties either. ๐Ÿ˜…)

But don't worry... You still get to deduct the cost of the car itself, just through depreciation instead. Two different deductions, and most business owners either mix them up or miss one completely.

This is the kind of stuff that gets left on the table when your CPA only talks to you in April.

Made a big decision this month: we're finally raising our minimum client revenue to $500K+.

Told my wife about it over dinner like I'd just closed a merger.

She said "cool, can you pass the salt."

This is what building a business looks like, folks. Glory. Fanfare. Salt.
